Abstract
Relief can be divided by height of a shape which is projected or separated on the foundation. It is divided into flat relief, semi-relief and elevated relief. Flat relief can be frequently found in sculpture works of the ancient Egypt and it is one of formative structures that relief can be created within outline having sharply engraved line around the shape.
This study is to give a meaning to application of relief to the history of western painting as the plane painting, analyze material characteristics used for researcher's works and examine the process of using relief to the plane painting.
Chapter 1 described the whole framework of the research and discusses direction, purpose and necessity of the research.
Chapter 2 examines the theoretical background of the researcher's works. It develops the body image and spiritual issues in contemporary art, examines how body shape revealed by distortion represents the contemporary and describes disappearing body as the basic concept defining the flatness through relief method applied by the researcher. Further it suggests transformation of body as a new image of human through "possibility of plane painting based on substantiality of post-flatness" not ideation of plane from ambiguity of pluralism.
Chapter 3 orients toward open attitude which can extend the areas of thinking on a variety of materials and media used for producing researcher's works through concrete experiments and analyzes resultant values through experimental methods, results and consideration for verifying materials used by the researcher as follows.
Section 1 conducts material preparation, composition of materials, measurement of shrinkage factor, surface observation, environmental harm test, antibacterial test and tensile strength test and section 2 examines influence of change of binder amount on clay characteristics, shrinkage factor in drying, volatile organic compounds, antibacterial, surface observation of clay and tensile strength test. And then experimental results of materials used by the researcher are suggested.
Chapter 4 combines change of plane and sculpture by applying relief method to plane, seeks potential of plane painting, applies and combines media and maximizes visual illusion by combining substantiality of expression, development of form and relief method. With these processes, the researcher objectifies his works through the above analysis and suggests validity of his works and its possibility to be developed to plane painting.
Finally, it is to verify logical validity from flatness problem of traditional painting through the research based on surface extension of plane and it is considered that it opens a possibility to make materials used for researcher's works be means for enjoying a new art work to modern people and enriching vitality as an artist. Artistic acts reflect characteristic traces of materials used for creating a novelty and must be invented by artists themselves not occurred in nature or merchandised environment. Thus it is expected that a new exploration of a new group of people latent in ourselves with the birth of mankind will be presented beyond the formative category and approach to reality with rich vitality will contribute to the spirit of pure painting greatly.
