Abstract
Virtual prototyping has been applied in product design and development with the improvement of virtual reality (VR) techniques. However, the current VR based prototyping has difficulty in guessing the product size and in interacting with the product intuitively and naturally. In addition, the sense of reality is decreased because the product is simulated in a virtual environment. The mixed reality based prototyping has emerged as a promising solution to overcome these shortcomings. This paper presents a novel approach based on mixed reality (MR) based interaction for design evaluation of portable electronic products using tangible objects. In the proposed approach, the realistic visualization is acquired by overlaying the rendered image of a product on the real world environment in real-time using computer vision based augmented reality (AR). For tangible user interaction in an MR environment, users create input events by touching specified regions of the product-type tangible object with a pointer-type tangible object. With this approach, we have implemented a system for design evaluation of portable electronic products in a mixed reality environment. This system facilitates the realistic visualization, tangible interaction, and functional simulation of the product, and thus helps to realize faster product design and development. Based on the proposed approach, a product design evaluation system has been applied for the design evaluation of various portable electronic products with encouraging feedbacks from the users.
