A Study on Natural-Dyed Clothing Design Focusing on Pleating

Clothing has existed with humans since human history began and its role has been considered important as part of culture and art in our society. Diverse changes in the industrialization of the 21st century have been attempted in many areas of life, and a more comfortable living quality is pursued. Fabrics as a material used in clothing have developed along with people and is one of the things closest to them. In the era of advanced informatization the fashion fabric industry should reflect and accept the changing trends, as well fashion design using expressions with a material, emphasizes a sculptural aspect following the demands of different times, and expresses its own unique autonomy. Fabric art used in fashion design has developed in diverse areas, but creative design has recently been pursued rather than the conservative designs of the past. Pleats are one detail used to decorate the surface of dresses and have been applauded as an important genre to express functional and creative artistic beauty. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a design using pleats as an expressive technique in natural-dyed fabric. For this purpose, this study used natural materials and dyes from the perspective of healing the body and mind with the trending concept of wellbeing and applied the pleating technique to details to create a design a product with value, functionality, and practicality. As more women have jobs these days, they have considered fashion important as a means to express their existence through their appearance. They pursue differentiated designs and eco-friendly materials for a better quality life and a unique character. Therefore, this study examined the artistic characteristics of pleats, the different types of pleats, and fabric designs where pleats are applied and then the results are applied to fashion design, with a focus on the development of a design which is eco-friendly and valuable as a product. Pleats used to express artistic beauty on the surface of a fabric were expressed as a cubic and relief with the use of one textile and its sculptural characteristics were analysed. This study examined the theoretical background based on a bibliographical investigation using national and international publications on pleats and costume culture with the origins of pleats categorized as ancient, middle, modern, recent and contemporary ages. A specific focus was given to the kinds of pleats used for fashion design, the techniques of dressmaking and design with chemically treated pleats and permanent mechanical pleats treated with heat. For this study, dressmaking technique using a material which was processed with chemicals was used, the cubic texture of the pleats which were made manually with heat was applied to part of the material, or a pattern was made with pleated cloth for the design in this study. The clothing in this study has unique patterns made through the natural dying technique and used pleats of different materials to develop designs with different appearances.

The results are presented as follows: First, if the ornamental aspect of pleats is combined with multiple dyeing and sewing techniques, the clothing designed can have an effect to attract attention from others and any defects can be minimized. Second, pleats using specially-processed materials can have a volume and a cubic effect through which a unique expressive and creative sense can be shown. Third, the effect of pleats made of specially-processed materials is a form of artistic creativity and as they can be developed as fashion design products, high-added values can be created, but there is a limit in that a lot of time and effort is required as the pleats are made manually. Therefore, further studies on methods to deal with making pleats automatically are needed, and eco-friendly new materials should be developed. New and advanced expressive methods should be developed to extend the possibilities and the future-oriented strategies to satisfy the characteristics desired and a unique aesthetic sense should be developed.|논문개요

의복은 인류역사가 시작된 시점부터 인간과 함께 존재하여 왔고 인간 생활의 문화, 예술의 일부로서 그 역할이 더욱 중요 시 되고 있다. 21세기 고도의 산업화의 발달은 여러 분야에서 다양한 변화가 시도되고 있고 인간에게 보다 안락한 삶의 질을 요구하고 있다. 의복의 재료인 섬유는 인류 문명의 발달과 더불어 발전되어 왔으며 가장 밀착되어 왔던 요소 중의 하나이다. 급진전된 정보화의 시대에서 패션 섬유 산업은 빠른 주기로 변화하는 트랜드를 반영하여 수용해야 하고 소재 표현에서 의상 디자인은 시대의 요구에 따라 조형적인 측면을 강조하고 있으며 독창적인 자율성을 표현하고 있다. 의상디자인에 사용되는 섬유조형은 다양한 디자인의 발전을 가져왔지만 과거의 디자인이 표현하는 보수적인 아이템보다 창조적인 것을 최근에는 추구하고 있다. 주름은 복식에서 표면을 장식하는 여러 종류의 디테일의 일부분으로 기능성과 독창적인 조형 예술미를 표현하는 중요한 장르로 각광받고 있는데 본 연구에서는 천연염색한 섬유에 주름이라는 표현기법을 디테일로 사용하여 디자인을 개발하고자 한다.

본 연구에서 요즘 트랜드인 참살이 웰빙으로 몸과 마음을 치료한다는 관점에서 소재와 염료를 천연으로 사용하고 주름기법을 디테일로 응용하여 상품성과 기능성. 실용성을 바탕으로 작품을 제작하고자 하였다. 여성의 사회진출이 활발하여 여성들은 자신의 존재를 표현하는 외면적표출 방법으로 단연 의생활을 중요하게 생각을 하고 있다. 차별화된 디자인과 친환경적인 소재를 추구하며 보다 나은 삶을 부여하고 개성을 살릴 수 있는 것을 중요하게 생각하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 주름의 조형적 특성과 주름의 종류, 주름을 적용한 섬유작품을 살펴보고 연구하여 의상디자인에 접목하여 친환경적인 상품성 있는 제품 개발을 염두에 두고 그 가능성을 열어 보고자 한다. 섬유 표면에 조형미를 나타내는 주름을 입체적이고 부조적인 질감으로 표현하여 하나의 텍스타일 소재로 이용하여 조형적 특성을 분석 연구를 하였다. 연구목적을 수행하고자 문헌적 조사방법에 의한 이론적 배경과 주름관련의 국내외 문헌을 통해 조사하였고 과거와 현재의 주름의 기원을 복식 문화 문헌을 통하여 고대, 중세. 근세, 근대, 현대로 나뉘어 조사하였다. 복식에 사용되는 주름의 종류를 조사하고 봉제 테크닉에 의한 방법, 화학적 처리 방법으로 표현한 주름기법, 또한 열 고정 처리로 영구적인 기계주름을 활용하여 디자인한 여성복을 중심으로 살펴보았다.

본 연구에서 화학적 처리가 가공된 재료를 이용하여 봉제 테크닉과 수작업으로 열을 가해 주름을 잡아 입체적인 질감을 표현하여 의상에 부분적으로 접목하여 디자인했고 또는 원단으로 만들어 패턴을 재단하여 제작 하였다. 본 연구자의 의상은 천연염색을 하여 독창적인 문양을 표현하였고 소재를 달리하여 만든 주름 공정으로 다양한 이미지의 패션 디자인을 전개 할 수 있었다.

이러한 연구를 통하여 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 복합염색과 봉제테크닉으로 인한 주름기법을 의복에 장식적인 요소를 배가시키면 시선을 집중시킬 수 있는 강조 효과를 나타낼 수 있어서 결점을 보완할 수 있다. 둘째, 특수 가공된 재료를 활용한 주름기법은 요철이 있는 볼륨을 주어 입체감을 주고 표면적인 예술성을 부여 시킬 수 있었고 독특한 표현 감성을 다양하게 할 수 있기 때문에 창의성이 있는 효과를 주었다. 셋째, 특수 가공재료의 주름 효과는 예술적인 창작성을 표현할 수 있고 아울러 독창적인 디자인으로 제품을 개발 할 수 있어서 고부가가치를 창출 할 수 있었지만 수공예에 의하여 제작되므로 사간과 노력이 따른다는 한계점이 있었다. 그러므로 기계로 대처할 수 있는 연구가 필요하고 아울러 친환경적인 신소재 개발이 이루어져야 할 것이며 가공 테크닉에 맞춘 새로운 첨단 표현 방식을 개발하여 그 가능성을 확대하고 더욱 개성 있고 독특한 미적 감각을 충족시킬 수 있는 미래지향적인 방향으로 나아가야 할 것이다.
