In the age of human oriented society with the diverse and complicated demands of people, identification of emotional states reflecting preferences has earned its strength as a major factor in interior space of the 21st century. The period of developing a personal character in childhood performs its functional capacities of communication skills in itself. Also, human emotions have a correlation among the images of all the memories about what people have experienced throughout their lives. In the dissertation, the focus is set on analyzing the definition and effect but also examining expressive characteristics of emotional design in multi-functional play spaces for children.
The scope of the study is specified: educational and fun play spaces, cafes and restaurants, performance stages and experience spaces of multi-functional play spaces for children. A total of 10 objects of the study include the play spaces established by Gwangju authorities and other places reported in domestic newspapers, books, and some web sites. For methodology, literature investigation for theoretical analysis is conducted which provides a fundamental base to the preliminary spot inspection and list creation of current status as well as to the full-fledged research that scrutinized children's play spaces according to expressive characteristics of emotional design. The results of putting the research findings together are as below.
First, emotional design of children's play spaces is most remarkably perceived in the common experiences of conditioned responses and non-daily experiences. Second, the investigation proves that emotional design is affected by environmental factors and children have emotional attraction to captured and continuous visual displays along with the representations that associated scales and humors suggest by various compositions of tales and stories. Third, the visitors in the field of real situations are more likely to feel relaxed and friendly by colors and furniture, ornaments, animated characters than a remindful associated scale provoked from the shape or various skin materials and extraordinary experiences. Therefore, play spaces for children should be applied with considerable understanding of childhood emotion and directed in a approachable and intimate mood. Fourth, the research findings show that the performance and experience spaces demonstrate the most effectiveness of emotional design followed by educational and fun play spaces, cafes and restaurants in order. However, it turns out that visitors seem to want emotional design in educational and fun play spaces by the same percentage of performance and experience spaces. So, more diverse and aggressive application of emotional design is required.
This study covers the general characteristics of emotional design in multi-functional play spaces for children. The necessity of emotional design in children's play spaces is to help children have a lot of fun with affinities and comfort. When the child gets exceptional physical and psychological development, emotional design in consideration of following spatial and visual factors should be planned because childhood is most sensitive to the environment: gadgets, adhesive animated character sheets, graphic design on a wall or a pillar reflecting the potential influences on children.
