- Abstract
- Contents of the Bible have been the most central topic in western art since the medieval period and it can be said that art itself existed for church. Medieval artists preached the God's words to people by producing the painting or making sculpture based on several stories of the Bible and after that artists sought the aesthetic value beyond preaching the gospel.
Water in the Bible made a symbol beyond natural object. This study is to explain water expressed in the age of Renaissance by historical stream of the Bible.
Expression of water in the Old Testament depicted God who is ruler of water by expressing it with color and image. Water in Noah's flood and scene that Israel people crossed the Red Sea is that as the dynamic and destructive being and as the instrument to experience salvation of Israel people and Noah and his families. And this accident is interpreted as a part of baptism in the New Testament.
Direct expression of water was not found in 'the Passover', but from the viewpoint of its symbolic meanings such as purification, death and regeneration, young goat on the table is like symbolism of water.
Expression of renaissance water in the New Testament was more abstractional. Water in the Annunciation is that of purity and is also related to holy spirit. It symbolizes for God and as the appearance of the holy spirit is combined with light and it reflects on Maria. Water in the Baptist and Christ's baptism symbolizes rebirth through death simultaneously. Water in Samaria woman is shown as the expression of place and instrument with well and jar and water in the Last Supper is symbol of Christ's flesh and blood and gives bread and wine. Christ's sacrifice on cross is connected to wine of the supper. It can be reasoned that Christ's death leads to eternal life.
Finally, water in Christ's crucifixion is symbolized for blood. Various forms of these paintings show direct expressions of water, but expression method of water in this study depicts water in accordance with character's psychological description and situation.
Expression of water in Renaissance is not depicting external form of water but is the result of union between the original nature of the Bible water has and artist's religion.
