- Abstract
- Novel polymer dispersed-liquid crystal (PDLC) materials have been developed by a photoinitiator-free photopolymerization (PIFP) system based on the electron-donor-accepter (EDA) concept. The PDLCs developed herein were obtained from a single liquid crystal and a mixture of vinyl ether (VE)/N-substituted maleimide (MI)/thiol or VE/MI/acrylate as precursors of the matrix. Photopolymerization kinetics have been studied by photo-differential scanning calorimetry (photo-DSC). The electro-optical properties and the morphology of resultant PDLCs were measured by visible spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The effects of the monomer feed ratio and chemical structure on the phase separation process, the photopolymerization behavior, the electro-optical properties, and the morphology have been discussed. The results show that the chemical structure of monomer and the monomer feed ratio are important parameters, which influence the final electo-optical properties and the morphology of PDLCs.
