Abstract

Yeonam Park Ji-Won produced about 10 novels based on distinctive recognition and representation of problems of his society. The literary ideas in his novels resisted against general conceptions and presented new sense of value and world view. Chapter 1 presents the purpose of the study, looks at previous studies and presents methods of the study. Chapter 2 looks at his life which pursued humanism and equality and conflicts between innovative and preservative parties. Chapter 3 speculates themes and ideological foundations of his novels. It analysed his ten novels such as < Yangbanjeon> < Husaengjeon> and according to commoners-oriented recognitions of life, antipathy, and limits to status system experienced by the people. Chapter 4 deals with ideological recognition and representation in his novels. His epistemology reflected realistic and national ideas. His realism revealed his ideas or feeling honestly and did not decorate at all. He believed that true realism had to include tiny and disgusting things. He extended it to nationalism. Nationalism focused on the present instead of the past and Joseon-oriented ideas instead of Chinese ideas. In particular, as his novels had Joseon-style language and native rhymes, his distinctive literary style was revealed. In respect to his representation, his novels had parody and humor, and configured figurative conceptions. Previous literary ideas suggested imitation of Chinese literature in a fixed standpoint was morality, but Yeonam faced up to reality to resolve social problems as a pioneering author with subjective mind.
