- Sociological view of art include such early theorists as Max Weber, Marx and Engels. Through the members of Frankfurter Schule The Social history of art have a clue of comprehensive art theory to us and develop. Arnold Hauser is in this process of development and known as a representative theorist. He noticed then a discipline of sociology that played an central role in contemporary ideas. And after World War there were social conflicts in developments of technology and mass-communication and it demanded new cognition for economical and social factors in producing of art. In this context his study of art describe art and literature in Europe from ancient to present in terms of social history. And he is meaningful in that between art and society one see the essence and autonomy of art in respect of sociology by explaining a social, historical production and condition of art and a form of representation of reproducing ideology in art with historical dialectic. If one confuse sociological important of art with aesthetic value one is to reject it.
Purpose of this thesis discuss the characteristic element and content of Hauser's sociology of art focused on the relationship between art and society. For this task I examine his works, 『Kunst und Gesellschaft, Sozialgeschichte der Kunst und Literatur』 and analysis these works critically. This dissertation intend to observe the Arnold Hauser's view of his Art and Society and trace the theoretical problems of social history of art in his opinion. Then I hope that it will contribute to supplement his social history of art. And it will investigate a fundamental issue of his theoretical construction of art history, analysing the main bibliographies of his social history of art and his main works concerned with art and society. By examinate his history of art in detail I mean to consider the application of his view of art and society to the practical writing of art history. Finally, I survey the critical discussions of his theory as a whole, and seek to find a direction of his social history of art and other possibilities.
