Abstract
Purpose: This study was to examine the relationship between social support, health promoting behaviors and depression of unmarried pregnant women.
Method: The subjects were 102 unmarried pregnant women. Data were collected from period August. 1 to October 10, 2006 and through personal interviews using a questionnaire. A structured questionnaire was used that included measurement of general characteristics, social support, health promoting behaviors and depression. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS program.
Findings:
1. The mean score of social support was 2.61 and there was statistically significant difference in the social support depending upon age(F=5.43, p=.002), educational background(F=8.16, p=.000), educational background of mother(F=4.93, p=.000), Association motive of spouse(F=5.99, p=.000), Attitude of spouse(F=15.77, p=.000) and currently relationship of spouse(F=18.49, p=.000).
2. The mean score of health promoting behaviors was 2.52 and there was statistically significant difference in the health promoting behaviors depending upon educational background(F=2.25, p=.046), Association motive of spouse(F=3.73, p=.004), attitude of spouse(F=5.41, p=.000) and currently relationship of spouse(F=10.40, p=.000).
3. The mean score of depression was 2.63 and statistically significant difference in the depression depending upon age(F=15.88, p=.000), educational background(F=10.61, p=.000), educational background of mother(F=4.90, p=.000), association motive of spouse(F=3.40, p=.007), Attitude of spouse(F=6.26, p=.000) and currently relationship of Spouse(F=14.40, p=.006).
4. There was a positive correlation between the social support and health promoting behaviors(r=.549, p=.000), There was a negative correlation between the social support and depression(r=-.629, p=.000), and also there was a negative correlation between the health promoting behaviors and depression(r=-.236, p=.017).
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, It is showed that higher social support increased Health promoting behaviors and decreased Depression, Therefore, it is necessary to develop a nursing interventions with these variables to help unmarried pregnant women to cope with changes appropriately.
