Abstract
The appearance of the concept of the objet expanded the area of expression in contemporary art in the 20th century and the visual effects and authors' intent could be delivered definitely through reproductions or the accumulation of mass produced products as a new method of expression.
The accumulation technique, a type of assemblage which appeared in the early 1960s, visualizes the potential representation of materials through distinctive rhythms and new shapes by accumulating and piling up objects with the same shape and expands the possibility in many expressions beyond the limits of material and the strict techniques in making artistic works.
Current floral art and design has been recognized as a sculptural art pursuing new expressionism through organic interaction with contemporary art out of the typical concept of flower decoration. With its change in recognized status, floral art and design focuses on the accumulation of natural materials which make various expressions possible beyond the limits of materials and strict techniques.
Therefore, this study analyzed the concept of accumulation, and the representations of accumulation in art and on the floral art and design based on these, as well relevant national and international books were reviewed and cases by national and international artists were compared.
The results are presented as follows:
First, the materials for accumulation used in art were ready-made items, waste, or natural objects while floral art and design mainly used natural objects.
Second, both areas used repetitive compositions of units for the sculptural structure of accumulation.
Third, floral art and design attempted to discover the sculptural meaning of accumulation through emphasis on nature, expression of configuration, and symbolism while art attempted to discover sculptural meaning through the presentation of properties of matter, expression of configuration, and presentation of social phenomena.
Accumulation in floral art and design specifies plant materials through various techniques and the creative aesthetic consciousness of artists as the result of a number of repetitive behavior within the given time and physical limits as a result of the property of using natural objects. Plant materials as the main material of floral art and design can be changed freely through repetitive structures of the units and can have an expanded area for installation art and earth work outside of their physical limits.
This study suggests that for active artistic activities, floral art and design first should transcend the limits of time and further studies should deal with preservation, the process, development of materials, and works of floral art more intensively. It is hoped that this study will be helpful in the development of various techniques in flora art and design and expand the field.
