Human beings acquire and develop their own styles and behaviors when they are born and grow up. Those behaviors continue for a relatively long period, showing a certain pattern, which is defined as a behavior pattern. Behavior patterns that represent one's individual features sometimes play a key role in understanding oneself and interacting with others. Especially during the adolescent period, human beings develop their own behavior patterns under the influence of education and the environment. Therefore, the adolescent years is considered the most important period in human life.
During the adolescent period, human beings are educated through ceaseless contact with the environment. Lots of environmental factors, such as natural factors like district and climate, races, society, and the shapes and colors of buildings, are closely related to human mentality. Those factors, consciously or unconsciously, exert influence on the mentality of adolescents and are reflected in the colors they choose. Colors are a very important factor in art therapy. Several psychologists have proved that colors have something to do with the mentality and behaviors of human beings. If an adolescent likes one certain color, the color becomes a style that represents him because it displays his character and behavior. Therefore, if colors are taught to adolescent in a way that corresponds to their individual conditions, it will expand their talents, boost their creativity and contribute to create a good learning environment.
What is written above have been confirmed through the result of a previous study on the relationship between colors and learning that the effective use of colors in a classroom based on the realization of the importance of color planning can generate an effect similar to the one acquired by color therapy.
Therefore, in order to better understand adolescents and to create a learning environment where adolescents can develop their potentials, research should be conducted regarding their preferred colors and the number of colors they use which have something to do with their academic performance.
This study compared and analyzed the relationship between students' color preference, the number of colors they use and their academic performance. The subjects of the study consisted of 314 seventh, eighth and ninth graders from 8 classes at three middle schools in Gwangju Metropolitan City. The students were told to draw whatever they like with 12 colors colored pencils, and from the drawings the researcher found out their color preference and the number of colors they used.
