Abstract
This study is to develop effective plans for the acquisition and correction of English articles based on a test of learners who use English as a foreign language. For the purpose, this study targeted a total of 200 high school students consisting of 100 males and 100 females living in Gwangju. Of those targeted, it selected a total of 60 students consisting of 30 males and 30 females who answered faithfully to the questions.
For this study, a questionnaire which can measure large-sized groups with ease and in quantity was prepared for data collection. It was composed of a total of 140 article questions as follows: 80 questions for the definite articles, 33 for indefinite articles, and 27 with zero articles. The results of the study was analysed with the use of One-way ANOVA and Two-way ANOVA in SPSS 12.0 statistics program.
For this study, the following four questions were presented :
First, what correlations exists between general English ability and English article acquisition?
Second, what difference is there in English article acquisition according to English proficiency?
Third, what difference is there in English article acquisition according to gender?
Fourth, what interactive effect is there in English article acquisition according to English proficiency and gender?
When the results of the questions were analysed, there was no significant difference in English article acquisition according to gender, but according to English proficiency, English article acquisition was different: advanced- , intermediate- and low group.
Based on the results, this study presents three English article instructive methods :
First, let the students in the low group know that there is regularity in English articles and they can learn them through regularity.
Second, for those in the intermediate group who understand the article system somewhat, help them participate in article learning actively and apply the system acquired for sentences beyond superficial instruction of articles, which leads to effective learning of articles.
Finally, for those in the advanced group who have their established article system, lead them to learn articles through reading, which is one of the most difficult problems in learning articles.
This study speculated English article acquisition of Korean high school students and based on the results, presents effective instructive methods. In the future, we have to recognize the importance of English articles and develop various teaching methods which are appropriate and effective for article learning.
