- Abstract
- Kim Su-Yeong is recommended as a representative poet in the participation literature of the sixties. But he has displayed his major creative writing in the field of Modernism. It is absolute that he is one of the aggressive and problematic poet in the history of Korea modern literature enough to get the evaluation of 'the great critic of Korean modernism'. He ran for the new possibility of the world of poetry to overcome chaos situation including lawless orientation and crude trial of the modernism poetry movement in the fifties. His practical and behavioristic view of poetry, that poetry is just behavior, created new storm and evoked sensation. His literary attitude for literature as a representation of society and a mirror of period lighted the new revolutionary mind of poetry to all the fields of modernism and popular literature. His poetry mind shows comparatively various colors of internal world including honest, conscience, freedom, revolution, and love. As he tried to employ unusual formation including distinctive line change, with broad employment of language including usual words, unusual words, abstract words, concrete words, and metaphorical words, his expression revealed various kind of variation.
He tried to focus on the spirit of 'modernity' except both participation poetry and pure poetry. His modernity which he intended was for making participation poetry and pure poetry to get more their characters rather than making them integral or new model. He incessantly wanted to display concrete accomplishment with attaching modern things and writer's mind. We can grip his poetic world in his deep inside at two ways of view with relation to his periodic situation and writer mind. One thing is to investigate how he navigated his poetic world with relation to real overcoming modern age, and the other thing is to read out his speed process as an ego which accepts the world in the relationship between the world and the ego. I worked this with expectation that we can identify his deep poetic consciousness coping with the periodic situation and the world on this works. After examining the poems of Kim Su-Yeong I could identify following things.
First, He showed his first attitude in poetry with revealing contrast between tradition and modern things in the dual condition of feudalistic and modern idea. He realized modernism as a task to solve with ethics. He tried to identify modernism through awareness of sorrow and self denial.
Second, it was confirmed that he contemplated modernism and sought to employ strategy for this actively. And his internal consciousness to embrace future with overcoming tragic awareness of fifties was captured. He considered the poetic attitude which approaches to the essence of life as important, and with this contemplation he tried to cope with cultural impact. After 1956, he made rigid decision to cut off grief and sorrow, and it changed his poetic world to the fullness of daily life. This flow made him to explore the meaning of aesthetic modernity and after that it consisted his poetic character.
Third, He expressed intelligent experience, which was from his high awareness, to seek real modern completion. This was the age that his ego enthusiastically moved to the world of revolution with the mood of great social revolution of the sixties. After 1961, under the dominating trend of deliverance and satirical aesthetics, his poems forwarded superiority spirit and oriented to the consciousness world of completed modernity where ego and world are integrated.
The results of examining speed process which was presented in Kim Su-Yeong's poems are followed. First, the speed of self-acceptance and the speed of self-denial are complicatedly expressed. He felt the change of age and tried to express his self centric speed in the late 1940s. But in the fifties, he once expressed negative for the symptom of speed-ism and revealed poetic consciousness demanding realization of reality.
Second, characteristically, he expresses a declaration of speed-ism and speed change by poetic revolution. With the topic, 'Living is penetrating difficulties' he converted to a positive and open minded life attitude after the middle of fifties. In the period of revolution 4.19, he had faced with the space of ultraspeed, which means he has been inspired with the ego and the expectation everything was possible. ,influenced by revolution 4·19. To him the period of military coup 5.16 was another space of speed zero where neither forward run nor backward run was possible. Then he faced the worst situation where he had to stop writing poems.
Third, following the speed change, he showed time consciousness forwards in a speed of world's integration. After military coup, he, who got to believe that the reality is the teacher of poets, more stressed absolute honesty and sincerity, and sought poetic attitude of refraining from world's trouble and emphasizing amicable coexistence. It meant that his ceased speed resulted from revolution and military coup got its ordinary space again. The ordinary speed was expressed by pure love of family. He recovered his equilibrium sense through love, and on the other hand began to establish the dream of world identification. In the sense of fixing his speed clear at the ordinary one, that was not slow nor fast, this was another start for different speed. That has led him to the world of the transcending speed where could come true not only the macro concilation but also the theory of coexiestance.
In the aspect of idea and artistry, Kim Su-Yeong has influenced greatly in Korea poetry history. He tried to write 'real poem' rather than participatory or pure problem on the base of absolute awareness of reality. And he stressed on the issue of 'conscience' and 'honesty'. His artistry can be seen in his various poetic experiment. The things like as unique description, ironical usage, paradoxical principle, using quotation as a description, and thinking method of ironical structure are his production from strict poetic mind and intense poetic imagination. These creative results became manure to the Korea modern world of poetry and gave them an opportunity to make a new leap.
