- Abstract
- Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared by polymerization induced phase separation method using UV curable monomers having different chemical structure and miscibility to liquid crystal.
The effect of the chemical structures and miscibility of acrylate monomers on phase separation between monomer and liquid crystal, polymerization behavior of monomers, the morphology and electro-optical properties of PDLC films was investigated. The acrylate monomers having alkyl group such as 2-EHA and 1,6 HDDA showed reratively good miscibility to liquid crystal and the monomers having hydroxyl and oxide group such as 2-HEA, TEGDA showed relatively poor miscibility.
The PDLC films with monomers having poor miscibility to liquid crystal resulted in well defined liquid crystal droplet morphology and the larger droplet size due to earlier phase separation on polymerization process. In addition, the PDLC film having larger droplet size(2-HEA > TEGDA > 1,6 HDDA > 2-EHA) exhibited better contrast ratio and lower driving voltage.
