Abstract
A museum is a location where spacial interaction occurs between the viewers and exhibitions within a building. When one considers the spaces for exhibitions alone, two types of interaction occurs - one between the exhibition and the viewers for the purposeof information, and the other among the viewers themselves for the purpose of socialization. Understanding such types of interactions is an important key of designing exhibitional spaces. Different from other buildings, the visual contact between the viewers and exhibits within a museum is achieved by the viewers' movement throughout the exhibitional spaces. The process of experiences in exhibitional spaces results in reactions which then are transferred to acts of viewing, forming the spaces or a specific course of movement.
Regarding this aspect, this study is to suggest the validity and the establishment of analyses of foreseeing the viewer frequency which is dependent upon the type of spacial structure, focusing on the interaction between a museum's exhibitional space structure and viewers.
For this study, three museums in Korea were subjected to examination. First, a qualitatively-fixed index was used for the analysis in order to both examine the subjected museums' outlines as well as each exhibitional space's spacial structure, and to prove the relationship between exhibitional space structures and viewer frequencies. In the analysis of exhibitional space structures, the index was compared to the spaces that were divided into blocks.
In the aspect of the structural composition of the museums' exhibitional spaces, evidences suggest that the viewer frequencies were affected by a minor issue of the control levels. This can be interpreted to mean that viewers can choose among the exhibitions to view because there were many connections to and from nearby spaces, creating many choices of viewing courses.
Therefore, it is evident that any single and fragmented establishment of index for analysis of exhibitional spaces' structures cannot be the appropriate approach to the viewers’actions. So related studies of how to apply the analysis index as well as establish the spectrum of analysis, considering the aspect of surroundings of the subjected exhibitions, are much needed.
