For the purpose, it interviewed 4,014 students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade from three elementary schools in Gwangju city and six elementary schools in Jeonnam using a questionnaire and analysed the data on their physical examination and the result are presented as follows:
1. In respect to the prevalence rate of the internet addiction, 41.5% of the subjects were in the beginning of addiction and 1.2% were seriously addicted. In sex, 0.3% of boy students were in the beginning of the addiction and 1.7% of boy students were seriously addicted. 31.7% of girl students were in the beginning of the addiction and 0.7% were seriously addicted. According to the grade, 33.0% of the students in the fourth grade were in the beginning of the addiction and 0.4% were seriously addicted. 41.4% of the students in the 5th grade were in the beginning of the addiction and 1.7% were seriously addicted. 48.2% of the students in the 6th grade were in the beginning of the addiction and 1.4% were seriously addicted.
2. The results of multi-variance logistic regression analysis are presented as follows: in respect to the variables that have significant relations with internet addiction, the risk of addiction of boy students was 0.5 times higher than that of girl students. The risk was 2.6 time higher when the students used the internet for 60~299 minutes than they used it for less than 59minutes; 4.2 times higher when they used it for 300~599 minutes and 6.1 time higher when they use it for more than 600 minutes. In respect to characteristics of internet using days, the risk of addiction was 1.4 times higher when they used it for 3 days than when they used it for one day and 2.4 times higher when they used it for 7 days. In respect to break in using the internet, the risk was 1.3 times higher when they had break only when they felt tired than when they had regular break and the risk was 1.9 time higher when they used the internet without break. In respect to the main purpose of internet use, the risk was 1.8 time higher when they used the internet for e-mail service and chatting than when they used it for information search for learning; 2.3 higher when they used it for game or entertainment; 1.7 time higher when they used it for news reading and MP3 program downloading. In respect to the expense for snack, the risk was 1.5 times higher when they spent 2,000~2,999 won for snack a week than those who did not spend money for snack at all and 1.7 times higher when they spent more than 3,000 won a week. In respect to the hours of TV watching, the risk was 0.7 times less when the students were in 1sabunwui than those in 4sabunwui. In respect to breakfast, the risk was 1.3 times higher when they had breakfast every morning than when they sometimes had breakfast. The risk was 0.5 times lower as the hours of sleeping increased one by one and 1.7 times higher when they had one or three friends, 1.6 higher when they had 7 or 9 ones and 1.5 times higher when they had more than 10 than when they had no friends on internet. As the grade of stress increased one by one, the risk was 1.03 times higher and as self-respect and self-control grade increased one by one, the risk was 0.9 times lower.
Based on the results of the study, the prevalence rate of internet addiction of elementary school students is presented as follows: 41.5% were in the beginning of addiction and 1.2% were seriously addicted. It indicates that social and psychological characteristics such as the current status of internet use, health status, stress, self-respect, and self-control affected the addiction in complexity.
Therefore, to prevent the internet addiction of elementary school students, they need to be instructed on internet use at home and schools, and further, it is suggested that educational approaches are important for cultivation of social and psychological factors such as decrease of stress, self-respect and self-control.
