Abstract

The study is aimed at identify social support, burden and quality of life in Intensive Care Unit(ICU) patient's family, to investigate the correlation among social support, burden and quality of life and to identify factors that influenced and quality of life in ICU patient's family. The data for this study were collected through a research which was conducted to ninety seven in ICU patient's family in C university hospital in Gwangju City, from August 16 to October 23, 2004. The instrument used for this sturdy, the social support measurement tool developed by Brandt & Weinert(1981) and adapted and revised by Oh Ga-sil & Seo Mi-hyee(1993), the burden measurement tool developed by Montgomery's (1985) and adapted and revised by Oh Sun-hak(2004), the quality of life measurement tool developed by Min Seong-gil(2000) in accordance with the guidelines of WHOQOL. The data collected were analysed using SPSS Win to descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, scheffe & Tukey post-validation test, Pearso -n's correlation and Stepwise multiple regression. The result of the study was as follows 1. The mean score of social support in ICU patient's family was 3.73. As a result of analyzing social support in accordance with general characteristics of Patient's family statistically meaningful difference was seen in age(F=2.682, p=.026), marital state(t=2.127, p=.036), education(F=4.544, p=.013), relationship with patient (F=4.024, p=.010). As a result of analyzing social support in accordance with general characteristics of patient statistically meaningful difference was seen in age(F=2.849, p=.028). 2. The mean score of burden in ICU Patient's family was 3.71. As a result of analyzing burden in accordance with general characte-ristics of patient's family statistically meaningful difference was seen in sex(t=10992, p=.049), religion(t=1.987, p=.050), relationship with patient(F=7.356, p=.000). As a result of analyzing burden in accordance with general charact- eristics of patient statistically meaningful difference was seen in religion(t=1.991, p=.049), treatment experience(t=3.317,p=.002), treatme- nt frequency(F=5.147, p=.002), admission duration(F=6.92, p=.002). 3. The mean score of quality of life in .CU patient's family was 3.30. As a result of analyzing quality of life in accordance with general characteristics of patient's family statistically meaningful difference was seen in relationship with patient(F=4.107, p=.009). As a result of analyzing quality of life in accordance with general characteristics of patient statistically meaningful difference was seen in religion(t=1.991, p=.049), treatment frequency(F=2.854 p=.041). 4. Regarding correlations, there was a significantly positive correlation between social support and quality of life. there was significantly negative correlation between burden and quality of life. also, there was significantly negative correlation between social support and quality of life. 5. Regarding predicting factors, the ICU patient's family quality of life of life was significantly affected by social support and burden. In conclusion, there are close among social support, burden and quality of life in ICU patient's family. Thus, the establishment of nursing interventional program is needed to promote quality of life in ICU patient's family
