Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cooling down, ibuprofen and acetaminophen on delayed onset muscle soreness, prostaglandin E2 and indirect markers of muscle damage. Twenty-eight subjects were divided into four groups(cooling down group, ibuprofen group, acetaminophen group and control group) performed bench stepping exercise(47cm, 15steps/min) for 40 minutes to induce muscle soreness. Subjects in ibuprofen group and acetaminophen group took either an ibuprofen pill(400mg) or acetaminophen pill(1300mg) every 8 hours within a period of 48 hours, where as subjects in control group received a placebo randomly(double blind). Subjects in exercise group performed mild running and static stretch for 20 minutes every 8 hours within a period of 48 hours. Prostaglandin E2(PGE2), creatine kinase(CK), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) were measured at pre-exercise, post-exercise 0, 24, and 48 hours after bench stepping exercise. Muscle soreness increased (p < 0.05) in all groups after 24 and 48 hours, although the ibuprofen group and the cooling down group yielded a significantly lower value (p < 0.05) after 48 hours. CK increased in the control group and the exercise group after 24 & 48 hours while CK level was not changed in the ibuprofen group and the acetaminophen group. LDH was not changed in all groups after bench stepping exercise. PGE2 decreased in all groups after bench stepping. However PGE2 level was significantly lower in ibuprofen group than other groups after 24 hours. The results of this study reveal that intake of ibuprofen can decrease muscle soreness and muscle damage.
