Abstract
Routine symbol is a term denoting an object having symbolic characteristics found or recomposed through people's daily routine that artistic activity is performed. It is also frequently used in our daily life and implies the visual environment of the same age as represented by researcher's intention. We can experience symbolic shapes involving various meanings in new visual environment established by high industrialization. These shapes have symbolism and utility as products made as a shape itself. It is also made by its physical properties and plays the functions of symbol or code to convey meaning in society. These symbols have relevance to art. They have potential objects of concrete reproduction. These have a sophisticated appearance and aesthetic value that are created and polished artificially. Thus when they are presented in the field of art not in normal daily life, they exist as objects of reproduction having visual meaning. But the meaning in the process of performing their original purpose disappears or weakens. And symbolic meaning by promise in daily routine is given a new function out of existing roles from the moment when it is adopted as the process of making a work of art. This newly established forms new functions with another symbolic meaning.
This study is based on organic relation of life and art through generalized aesthetical concerns as to what makes the monopoly of art possible in everyday society. Since Industrial Revolution, the impact of corporate symbols have had a great influence on human life. Most of things around us were replaced by new industrial products and these changes have been extended to art areas. It means the organic relation of life and art that aesthetic concerns or values of art are not confined to special areas like museum or artists' studios or in isolated spaces only for special social classes. But these are based on generalized aesthetic concerns in our daily life. On the other hands, art is closely related to essential and continuous parts of human life, but is realized in independent objects or relations. Art is simply man's activity achieved through universal standard of values which can make and share sympathy throughout our society, not a special and limited one.
This study connects man's daily life in contemporary industrial society with art based on the generality of aesthetic concerns and further seeks the value of daily routine as the source of concrete creation. Also it is to embody daily routine to object of creation. These kinds of daily routines are ranged from visual objects such as a variety of brand marks, letters, symbols and industrial products used widely in modern society to 'image' of the same age or cultural phenomenon. These kinds of daily routines achieve representational recomposition depending on researchers' symbolization methods including combination, transformation, presentation, repetition and synthesis and obtain possibility of new representation and interpretation as routine symbols.
The researcher will give five meanings to these routine symbols. The first meaning is visual pleasure. Visual pleasure means that an object in daily routine we already knew is recognized newly in the area of art, takes another emotion or interpretation of the object and we feel joy or pleasure and further happiness from it. The second meaning is the materialization of commodity, that is, that of object. It can reflect social and environmental features of the same age through various commodities having symbolism as the historical products representing capitalist society and is brought about by materialization of object having the significance as the commercial media extends the areas of art in relation to surrounding environment or attracting them to daily routine. The third meaning has symbolic communication through the researcher's work by making use of expression through daily symbols. The fourth meaning is non-verbal language achieved by verbal communication within society although it has not concrete language structure. And the fifth meaning presents a kind of unfamiliarity or surprise appeared as the result of non-usual approach of ordinariness.
Routine symbols giving such a meaning are embodied to the object of work and completed to art works by pictorial painting methods. Such expression methods as repetition of synonym, symmetrical structure, active utilization of media, geological pattern and different types of expression are analyzed through this study and the meaning in the area of painting using usual symbols can be confirmed.
It is shown that researcher's approach of usual symbols is performed actively not to remain the theoretical stage and it can be played as the role of data supporting the value and meaning of this research positively. The last chapter of this study divides complete works into daily shift, pictorial transformation and sign language, examines their characteristics, analyzes works with these three classifications and draws analysis results including reinterpretation of works through temporal and spatial differences, relations between design and art, character of popular art and speculative symbol image.
Therefore, this study highlights meaning of usual symbols made through meeting of daily routine and art in the various trends of contemporary paintings and focuses on analyzing how to express process of encapsulation to concrete art works. In conclusion, routine symbols have value as concrete materials representing visual environment of the same age in contemporary painting and are to remind us of valid evaluation and recognition of this meaning. New recognition of routine symbols and exploration of methods dealing with it should be investigated and concerns on this possibility and new media should be also continued.
