Abstract

Purpose : This study assessed the new bone formation rate around implants subjected to early and immediate functional loading in the partially edentulous mandible in five dogs. The new bone formation rate was also compared with that of unloaded controls. Material and Method : In five dogs, three premolars and the first and second molars were removed from the left mandible; 3 weeks later, the corresponding teeth were removed from the right mandible. Twelve weeks later, five implants were installed in the left mandible; 3 weeks after that, another five were installed in the right mandible. Four implants on both sides were given a fixed provisional restoration and loaded. The anterior-most implant was used as an unloaded control. Some provisional restorations were lost during the observation period. After 16 weeks, the implants were retrieved, together with the adjacent bone. Results : The peri-implant new bone formation rate was 75.00% in the early functionally loaded group, 73.37% in the immediately functionally loaded group, and 62.04% in the unloaded group. Conclusions : Early and immediately functional loading increased the peri-implant new bone formation rate compared with that of unloaded implants. Rigid splinting seems to be crucial for implant success.
