- Abstract
- Background:Thyroid nodule has seen relatively common disease and it's prevalenceestimatedabout4-7%.Recently,highresolutionultrasonographyhas madethedetection ofsmallthyroid nodulepossible.Increasesin thedetection ofthyroid nodulehavecreated aclinicaldilemmaon how toproperly manage suchthyroidnodules. We investigated the prevalence, clinicaland ultrasonographic characterisitics, and optimaldiagnosticapproach toward detected benign and malignantthyroid nodules.
Method:A retrosepctivereview wasundertaken on the372patientswhowas done UltrasonograpyguidedfineneedleaspirationbiopsyinChosunUniversity Hospital,Gwang-Ju,Korea between July 2003 and Spring 2005.Devided into fourgroup such asbenign and malignantthyroid noduleon thebasisofsize 1.5cm.The review consisted ofthyroid function test, antithyroid antibodies, thyroidautoantibodies, thyroidultrasonography, fineneedleaspirationbiopsyin eachgroup.
Result:The prevalence ofthyroid nodule malignancy rate was 18.0%.The prevalenceofthyroidincidentalomamalignanctratewas17.5%.Therewereno significantdifferences in age, sex, thyroid function testand sizebetween the benign, malignant incidentalomas and thyroid nodule. Ultrasonographic chracterisitics , include ultrasonography index point showed meaningful diagnosticvalueforthedetectionofmalignancyinthyroidnodule.
Conclusion: Thyroidcancersarefairlycommonfinding.Therearenoclinical difference between benign and malignant thyroid nodule; however, ultrasonographic findings can be used to decision of optimal management strategies.
