- Abstract
- This study aims at identifying the effect of group art therapy using
mandala and collage on enhancement of concentration and self-esteem of
children from broken home. It is based on theoretical grounds that when
group art therapy is provided with a use of mandala and collage for the
subjects, they can have enhanced concentration and self-esteem through
conscious seeking and expression of their unconscious needs. And it is
expected it will contribute to good adjustment to their school life and
prevention of their problematic behaviors.
This program targets five children with low concentration and self-esteem
from broken home and is provided a total of 16 sessions for 50 minutes
once or twice a week from August 1 from October 15, 2007.
This study examines only the area of concentration to identify changes in
the concentration whose scores are above 75 of the behavior judgement

measures for children and adolescents (K-CBCL) and carries a comparative
analysis on the progress before and after the program using K-HTP. To
examine the changes of self-esteem, it carries a comparative analysis on the
progress before and after the program using a self-esteem test and K-HTP.
The results of the study are presented as follows:
First, this study examines the transitional aspects of the subjects by the
program using mandala and collage and finds that the post K-HTP shows
positive changes in comparison with the pre- K-HTP.
Second, this study provides group art therapy for the subjects and
compares their scores of concentration. All the subjects show significant
difference in concentration as follows: from more than 75T to less than 60
T.
Third, when the program is provided for the subject to examine the
transitional aspects of their self-esteem, their self-esteem is enhanced,
through which the effect of the program is demonstrated.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that group art therapy using
mandala and collage designed to enhance concentration and self-esteem of
children from broken home is effective in enhancement of concentration and
self-esteem, and the program helps the subjects have internal power to see
their internal sides through self-seeking, self-expression, self-recognition
and self-acceptance, emotional support and psychological stability.
