Abstract
This study is to examine electroencephalogram (EEG) activation and emotion state by each brain region during imagery stimulation with 33 women university students majoring in dance having 10-year career and 33 women university students. Electroencephalogram was measured and recorded for five minutes through 4 times. The first measurement was at stable state before imagery stimulation, the 2nd was during dance appreciation by audiovisual aids, the third was during listening to music and image imagination and the fourth was at stable state after imagery stimulation. Measured parts were Fp1, Fp2, F3, F4, C3, C4, P3 and P4 with International 10/20 electroade system. Measuring device used computerized wire EEG measurement device QEEG-8 System (Model Name: LXE3208, Laxtha Inc., Korea). Data of electroencephalogram signals from 8 channels are collected with time series analysis program by Laxtha's TeleScan (ver. 2.0) and relative power and coherence of cross correlation between two channel pair. Emotion state test used Korean edition of the profile of mood state (K-POMS) to examine mood state before and after four EEG measurements. As a result of analysis, relative power by each frequency region showed a significant group difference only in theta wave. Therefore, coherence and left and right brain activation centering around theta wave were analyzed and their relevance with emotion state was examined.
1. As a result of repeated measure two way ANOVA of relative power of theta wave, 8 channels showed significant group differences. In particular, dancer group showed consistent increase of theta wave at four real-time EEG changes. But, general group showed inconsistent and trivial increase of theta wave.
2. Coherence analysis of theta wave 8 channels used paired t-test for the comparison before and after EEG measurements between the 1st and the 2nd, the 2nd and the 3rd, and the 3rd and the 4th. As a result of analysis, danger group showed relatively consistent and symmetrical increase and decrease of theta wave at left and right compared to general group. In particular, group differences at the 3rd imagery stimulation and the 4th stable state were remarkable.
3. For the comparison of relative activation of left and right brain region (Fp1-Fp2, F3-F4, C3-C4, P3-P4) of theta wave 8 channels, t-test was conducted by each group. As a result of analysis, there was a remarkable group difference at the 3rd imagery stimulation and in particular, dancer group showed a significant increase of right brain (F4, C4, P4). But general group showed the same trend of activation at left and right brain during four different brain activities.
4. As a result of repeated measure two way ANOVA of subfactors of mood state, there was a significant group difference at tension, depression and confusion. From comparison of mean value by groups, dancer group showed low value of negative emotion at stable state before imagery stimulation compared to general group and it had relatively stable emotion state. But after imagery stimulation both groups showed similar decrease of negative emotions.
To sum up the above results, dancer group's EEG showed dominant activation of theta wave reflecting internal creation and stable state. Changes in coherence of theta wave and activation of left and right brain showed remarkable group difference at the 3rd imagery stimulation. Then dancers' brain activity was dominant in activation of right brain and their brain nerve was organized and kept efficient state by enhancing functional cooperation among each channel. It was found in relation to emotional changes that imagery stimulation using theme of 'love' proposed by this research reduced negative emotions such as tension, depression and confusion and activated theta wave.
