르네 마그리트의 재현에 관한 연구 말과 이미지를 중심으로

Abstract

르네 마그리트(Rene Magritte, 1898-1967)는 전 생애를 통해 회화가 세상을 변화시킬 수 있다는 오랜 믿음을 보여주고자 하였다. 특히 회화를 통해 사회의 선입관을 공격하고자 했던 마그리트는 현실과 회화의 전통적 관계를 새롭게 하고자 하였다. 20세기 미술사에서 마그리트가 차지하는 독창적인 위치는 서구 미술사에서 오랜 전통으로 자리 잡은 모방으로서의 재현의 문제를 극복하기기 위해 다양한 표현방식을 탄생시킨 기존의 화가들과 달리, 오히려 평범한 사실주의적 기법을 통해 ‘재현’의 문제에 접근하고 있다는 것이다. 회화를 통한 실제 세계에 대한 끊임없는 탐구는 마그리트에게 있어서 존재와 리얼리티에 대한 문제로 접근된다. 대상의 존재에 대한 연구와 리얼리티에 대한 마그리트의 재해석은 플라톤 이래 지속되어온 리얼리즘적 세계관과 모방론을 붕괴시키는 연구가 될 것이다. 이와 더불어 마그리트는 말과 이미지를 통해 회화적 재현과 언어적 재현의 문제에 접근한다. 이 모두는 마그리트의 ‘재현’의 문제에 핵심이 된다. 20세기에 들어와 말과 이미지의 관계가 새로운 학문적 관심사로 부각되고 있는 시점에서 마그리트의 회화적 특성 중 말과 이미지에 대한 시각은 중요한 연구가치가 있을 것이다. 그렇다면 마그리트의 경우, 이미지를 통해 보여주는 대상과 그것들이 재현하는 것과의 관계는 무엇인가? 이미지가 단순히 외부의 실재를 재현하는 것이 아니라고 한다면, 회화가 보여주는 것은 무엇이며, 그것이 의미하는 것은 무엇인가? 마그리트의 회화에서 언어, 그리고 이미지는 어떻게 규정되며, ‘말과 이미지’의 상호작용은 우리에게 어떠한 의미를 제공하는가? 이러한 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위해 본 연구는 대상의 존재와 실재에 대한 탐구, 시ㆍ지각의 문제, 현실과 환영의 문제, ‘말과 이미지’의 문제를 통해 접근하고자 한다. 그리고 이 모든 문제들을 통해서 우리는 마그리트가 ‘재현’의 문제를 독창적인 방식으로 탐구하고 있음을 밝힐 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 크게 네 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 첫째, 마그리트는 우리가 일상생활에서 경험하는 평범한 사물들에 대해 의도적으로 형태를 변화시키고, 잘못된 위치 및 재질의 변화, 그리고 서로 상이한 것들을 결합시킴으로써 사물들의 숨겨진 본질을 드러낸다. 이러한 대상에 관한 실재(Reality)의 의미를 불안하게 해서 대상의 존재를 드러내고자하는 마그리트의 회화적 방법에 대해 Ⅱ장에서 고찰하고자 한다. 둘째, 언어, 이미지, 그리고 더 나아가서는 우리 사유와 관련된 재현의 문제에 관해 탐구하고자 한다. 이를 위해 현대미술에서의 언어와 이미지의 사용이 마그리트와 어떤 차이가 있으며, 마그리트의 경우 말과 이미지는 회화 속에서 어떠한 본질적 속성을 갖고 있는지에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 셋째, 마그리트의 언어와 이미지의 본질에 대한 규명을 토대로 그의 회화 속에서 말과 이미지의 상호작용에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 그러기 위해 서구예술론에서 말과 이미지의 관계에 대한 연구가 전제되어야 할 것이다. 이를 바탕으로 마그리트의 회화 속에서 ‘말과 이미지’의 관계에 대해 시리즈를 통해 논의하고자 한다. 이러한 고찰을 토대로 본 연구는 마그리트의 회화 이해에 필수적인 재현의 문제를 정리하고, 더 나아가 마그리트의 회화 이론이 말과 이미지를 통해 우리에게 어떠한 의의를 제공하는지에 대해 평가하고자 한다. 이러한 ‘재현’에 대한 마그리트의 독창적인 사고는 미술이론에 또 다른 가능성을 열어 준다. 특히 개념적인 미술의 활발한 활동들을 보이고 있는 현대 미술상황 속에서 이러한 마그리트의 태도는 기존의 미술개념을 초월한 새로운 미술의 가능성을 제기하여 미술의 영역을 확장시키며, 이를 통해 현대의 구상회화가 나아갈 새로운 방향을 제공해줄 것이다.|Rene Magritte (1898-1967) intended to show his long-cherished belief that painting can change the world throughout his life. Specifically, he, who attacked prejudice of society through painting, intended to renew the traditional relations between reality and painting. He occupied an independent position in the 20th century art history in that he understood ‘representation’ through common realistic techniques. He was different from other artists who created various types of representation to overcome reproduction through imitation which has been recognized as a tradition in western art history. His consistent exploration of actual world through painting may be approached through existence and reality. His studies on existence of objects and reinterpretation of reality destroyed the view of realistic world and the theory of imitation that have been maintained since Platon. Also, Magritte approached painting and linguistic reproduction through words and images. All of these are a core of his representation. In the 20th century, as an academic attention has been given to a relation between words and images, it is believed that words and images which are characteristics of Magritte painting deserve academic attention. If so, for Magritte, what is the relation between objects that are seen through images and their representation? If images do not simply reproduce external reality, what is painting trying to show and what does it mean? In Magritte's painting, how are language and images defined and what meaning does interaction between words and images provide for us? To answer these questions, this study identifies existence and actuality of objects, visuality and perception, reality and illusion, and words and images. And through these questions, this study is to make clear that Magritte explored representation in his unique way. For the purpose, this study is roughly categorized as follows: First, Magritte intentionally transformed common things we experience in our daily life and connected things with wrong positions and different textures to uncover hidden nature of the things. Chapter Ⅱ speculates the painting method of Magritte who intends to reveal existence of objects by making meaning of reality unstable. Second, this study is to speculate language, images and further reproduction related to our thoughts. For this, it investigates what difference use of language and images in contemporary art have from Magritte's method, and for Magritte, what essential properties speech and images have in painting. Third, this study is to speculate an interaction between words and images in Magritte's painting based on identified essence of language and images. For this, it is suggested that studies on relations between words and images in western art theory should be preceded. Based on the results, it is to discuss relations between words and images through his < This is not a pipe > series. Also, this study is to identify representation which is necessary for understanding of Magritte's painting and furthermore, to asses what meaning Magritte's painting theory provide through words and image. Magritte's unique thinking on representation opens another possibility to art theory. Specifically, in the condition of contemporary art which has paid attention to conceptual art, his attitude presents a possibility of new art beyond existing concept of art, expands art areas and provides a new direction for contemporary concrete painting.
