- Abstract
- Pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloys widely used as dental implant materials because of its suitable mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility. The latter is mainly due to its excellent corrosion behavior in the clinical environment. The first factor to decide the success of dental implantation is sufficient osseointegration and high corrosion resistance between on implant fixture and its surrounding bone tissue. Thus many studies about this have been under actively. In this study, in order to increase corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of dental implant, pure Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy was fabricated and then surface of manufactured alloy was coated with TiN using arc ion plating method. The electrochemical behavior of TiN coated dental implant fixture were investigated using various electrochemical methods.
These results are as follows :
1. AFM surface morphology of non-coated fixture showed lower roughness than that of TiN coated implant fixture. The structure of TiN coated layer showed the columnar structure.
2. The pitting potential of the TiN coated implant fixture is comparatively higher than that of non-coated implant fixture.
3. The passivation current density of TiN coated implant fixture was smaller than that of the non-coated implant fixture in 0.9% NaCl solution, indicating the good protective effect resulting from more compact and homogeneous layer formation.
4. In the case of non-coated implant fixture, pitting corrosion showed apparently in crest and root of screw, but in the case of TiN coated implant fixture, pit did not appeared in crest and root of screw.
Therefore, the pit which act a site of fatigue fracture nuclei number decreased in crest and root of screw. Consequently, it was concluded that screw crest and root of TiN coated dental implant fixture showed a good pitting resistance compared with non-coated implant fixture. Therefore it might be possible to prolong the fatigue fracture life of dental implant fixture.
