슬래쉬 기법을 이용한 섬유표현 연구

Abstract

현대섬유예술은 전통적이고 고정화된 기법에서 점차 벗어나 타 분야의 예술과 상호영향을 주고받으며 그 표현영역을 넓혀 나아가고 있다. 이는 다양한 소재의 응용, 표현기법의 발굴과 개발을 통하여 가능할 수 있었으며 무엇보다 수많은 섬유작가들의 지칠 줄 모르는 끊임없는 탐구정신, 실험정신에 의한 기법적인 연구와 함께 다양한 예술적 시도가 있었기에 가능한 일이었다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 현대섬유예술의 시대적인 흐름에 초점을 맞추어 슬래쉬 기법을 이용하여 섬유의 재질 변화 및 독특한 부조적인 느낌의 시각적, 촉각적 효과를 주로 이용하는 섬유재료뿐만 아니라 모시, 노방, 한지 등 다양한 섬유재료에 적용하였다. 그리고 각 재료의 특성에 따라 나타나는 표현효과를 적극 활용한 조형작품 및 상품의 연구 제작을 통하여 섬유예술의 표현방법을 확장시키고 섬유표현기법으로서 슬래쉬 기법의 발전 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다. 이에 관련된 문헌을 통하여 이론적인 고찰을 하고 다양한 재료의 특성과 슬래쉬 표현효과 및 장단점을 파악하여 작품제작을 한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 표현재료는 천연섬유에서부터 과학문명에 의하여 탄생한 섬유에 이르기까지 어떠한 소재도 가능하였으나 작품제작과정에서 경사와 위사가 다른 조직으로 이루어진 인조 스웨이드는 사선의 방향에 따라 전혀 다른 질감의 차이를 나타냄으로써 계획한 디자인의 슬래쉬 형태는 불가능하였다. 둘째, 슬래쉬 기법의 조형표현은 독특한 섬유의 질감 변화, 부분적인 슬래쉬와 다양한 슬래쉬 형태로 미적, 조형적 가치를 높일 수 있었으며 자유로운 표현이 가능하였다. 셋째, 색상 배열에 따라 느낌이 확연하게 달라지는 슬래쉬 기법의 특성은 모든 재료에서 공통적으로 나타났으나 보풀이 잘 일어나는 면 소재에서 가장 뚜렷하게 나타나며 아름다운 색채조화를 보였다. 넷째, 상품의 제작은 주로 많이 이용되는 핸드백과 더불어 테이블 리넨, 슬리퍼 등에 이용하여 슬래쉬 기법을 이용한 생활소품의 활용범위를 넓힐 수 있었고 사용상의 불편함이 없이 슬래쉬 기법의 미적특성을 살려 여러 제품에 이용 가능함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여 연구자는 슬래쉬 기법에 주로 이용하는 재료뿐만 아니라 다양한 재료를 이용한 섬유표현을 시도하였다. 그러나 경사와 위사가 다른 조직으로 이루어진 인조 스웨이드의 경우 계획한 디자인의 슬래쉬 형태가 불가능하여 작품을 완성할 수 없었으며 이는 큰 아쉬움으로 남는다. 앞으로 재료에 대한 철저한 분석과 표현재료의 다양화로 창의적이고 실험적인 예술적 시도가 계속 이루어진다면 실용 목적으로 주로 생활소품에 이용하였던 슬래쉬 기법을 문화상품, 의상, 작품 등에 폭 넓게 이용함으로써 섬유표현기법으로서 가치를 더욱 높일 수 있을 것이라 여겨진다.|Modern fiberartis extending its expressive ground by gradually breaking away from its traditional and manneristic technique and by mutual exchange with other art forms. This was brought possible by practical application and development of its expressive technique by many fiber artists, whose ceaseless search for a new skill and whose spirit and energy brought about avariety of artistic experiments. In accordance with this trend in fiber art, present study focuses not only on thos ealtered fiber materials that use slash techniques for a relief-like look and texture, but also on a variety of basic materials including ramie, Nobang(a fabric made of silk like fabric resembles a sheer stiff muslin), and Hanji(Korean paper). Inaddition, this study aims to expand the expressive mode for fiberart, by aiding the manufacture of arts and commodities which substantially emphasize the textural aspect of basic material, and to point out the promising potential of the slash technique. Based on theoretical considerations through bibliographical research and practical experience of manufacturing artworks utilizing various materials and slash effect, the following conclusions are made. First, from natural to artificial fiber, any type of material can be used for slash technique. However,artificial suede, whose contrasting texture in its warp and weft make oblique lines unstable, is impossible to handle using the slash pattern. Second, for mative expression using the slash technique, with its characteristic textural variation and flexibility in patterning, is a esthetically satisfactory and allows great freedom inexpression. Third, the unique nature of slash to render multiple impressions according to array of colors is commonly found in allmaterials used in this study,but is most prominently and satisfactorily displayed in cotton, a material that easily raisesnap. Fourth, manufacturing practical merchandise using slash technique can be extended to not only hand bags, a popular item,but also table linens and slippers. Slash technique is versatile enough to be used in these practical yet a esthetically pleasing items. This paper investigat esthe artistic potentials in fiber expressions not only of those materials that use slash technique but al so of other materials. Unfortunately however, in the case ofartificial suede, its textural structure prevents it from being made into slash designs. This leaves room for further in-depth analys is and development of basic materials in text ilede signing. The slash technique has been reserved mainly for application to practical merchandises.However,a comprehensive adaptation of slash technique into other goods such as cultural products, wardrobe, and art works may increase its value as an important means of expression in fiber art.
