Abstract

This thesis examines the reciprocal relationship between sculpture and special effects makeup. Performance Art and motion pictures, especially science fiction films, have long drawn heavily upon the field of special effects makeup. It is my view that an understanding of sculptural structure is a requirement of successful special effects makeup. In this study, I will discuss how sculptural technique is applied to special effects makeup by analyzing the methodologies and materials of each field. The technical and aesthetic aspects of special effects makeup have only recently progressed to their present level of sophistication. The study of sculptural structure will enhance that recent development. My thesis examines examples of the most frequently employed techniques of special effects makeup from the beginning of motion picture history until today.Painting, miniatures, molding, and anatomy are included. Several problems imposed by the use of sculptural techniques are discussed.First, there is a lack of awareness of sculptural techniques and a lack of professional education in the field of special effects makeup.Second, there is a scarcity of experts in this field resulting in a paucity of relevant reference works.Finally, the few reference works that do exits come from outside Korea, as do the materials with which special effects makeup artists work. The techniques of sculptural structure must be applied to special effects makeup according to each situation and each character in order to achieve creativity and meanings through visual representation. For the purpose of creating dramatic effects, special effects makeup must express the motivations of the characters in a film.In order to train artists who can achieve these effects, appropriate education is very much needed. My thesis is limited by the ill-defined value system that has emerged from diverse subjective interpretations by individual viewers. Continuing research based upon experiments and field experience will be necessary if special effects makeup is to flourish in Korea.
