Abstract

The range of this paper is to find out the similarities and the differences of present perfect aspect among StE(Standard English), CSE(Colloquial Standard English) and Korean. These three languages have the similarity in that they have present perfect aspect in sentences or conversation. However, sometimes their expressions are very crucially different in sentences or conversation. Based on these phenomena, this paper investigates TETU(the emergence of the unmarked) in present perfect aspect of SE, CSE and Korean. According this fact, this paper aims to study on variation in the expression of present perfect aspect from a cross-linguistic perspective; SE, CSE and Korean. We will make the following proposal: in CSE temporal adverb already, which has [DIPHASIC] and [ANTP] features according to Fong(2003, 6-7) and Michaelis(1992, 326), functions as an unmarked aspectual operator. This idea will be applied to Korean temporal adverb imi(‘already’), which is similar to English temporal adverb already. In this paper to examine TETU closely, we will introduce Optimality Theory(Prince & Smolensky, 1993), which is based on constraints.
