Space itself connotes a boundary and an area of the space though it is infinite. That is, space has a boundary based on infinity. In such meaning, expansion of space can be understood as expansion of the range of boundary. Visual expansion is an expansion of area due to ambiguous boundary according to visual recognition, and infinite possibility of the boundary expands boundary accompanied by possibility.
Through such visual expansion, the boundary of space becomes ambiguous and a boundary is infinitely expanded due to uncertain recognition on space.
This study speculates how visual expansion is represented according to expressive characteristics, application of visual expansion to space and space change, which is intended to help formation of various spaces according to expanded recognition and changed space concepts.
Frist, it examines how walls are visually expanded and changed by expressive factors and representational techniques of light, colors and finish materials according to representative characteristics of walls. The expressive factors that brings visual expansion to walls are roughly classified into diffusion, transmission, transparency, reflection and contrast of colors. They expand walls by representative techniques such as flashing light, floating light, full light, texture of finish materials, light reflection and color contrast.

According to space in which visual expansion of walls is applied, visual expansion is classified into three types : functional, aesthetic, and psychological. The functional expansion is applied to make narrow halls look wider, and to make small hall look larger. When the functional expansion is applied for walls, a representative technique of reflection of finish materials is mainly used. For aesthetic expansion, visual expansion is applied as an aesthetic factor of space, which is used for counters or information desks. It contributes to effective delivery of space image or diversified representation of space. When walls are faced with vision level of customers, psychological unstability or irritation may occur. Walls are visually expanded to relieve the unstability, through which openness and stability of space are obtained. This psychological expansion is mainly used in installing a built-in sofa in a wall as representative techniques such as light diffusion or color contrast.

Thus, as visual expansion interprets expressive characteristics applied for walls as physical structures by a visual and perceptual recognition system, non-materialization of walls and change in properties expand walls visually through destructing a physical boundary, and expanded walls make the boundary of space ambiguous, which gives a sense of expansion to space.
And, visual expansion of walls induces space representation to be expanded through diversification of space beyond simple expansion of space according to expansion types.
