- Abstract
- Background : The mortality of colon cancer is reduced by a proper screening test. The colorectal polyp, particulary the adenoma, has been regarded as a precursor of cancer. The rationale for colorectal cancer screening programs is that the earlier detection of localized, superficial cancers in asymptomatic individuals will increase the surgical cure rate. Recently, colonoscopic screening was reported more effective than stool occult blood test or sigmoidoscopy in America. This study was perfomed for the purpose of assessing its availability of colonoscopy in screening for colorectal cancer.
Method : We analyzed the 489 cases which have been able to be inserted up into the cecum from Sep. 2003 to Sep. 2004 in Chosun university hospital. Of the 489 full colonoscopies, referred patients with suspicious colorectal cancer or polyps were excluded. Out of 489 patients, 423 (87%) have come to see a physician as appealing the symtomes as such and 66 (13%) have undertaken the screening test.
Results : 42 patients (65%) out of 66 patients, who underwent screening colonoscopy have not demonstrated any specific findings and 24 (35%) have demonstrated colon polyps while 13 (57%) out of 24 have demonstrated tubular adenoma and 4 (14%) for tubulovillous adenoma according to the result of biopsy. As a result, among the 66 patients, who underwent screening colonoscopy, 17 (25%) patients were found to have colorectal ademomas.
