Abstract
The Aster tataricus is a chinese traditional medicine called "Ziwan" which has an expectorative and remediable cough action. The antioxidant activities of Aster tataricus were investigated. Oxidative stress resulting from the toxic effects of free radicals on tissues plays an important role in aetiology or pathogenesis of various degenerative diseases of aging, such as brain dysfunction, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc. A number of studies have been performed to discover antioxidants from natural products. In our research for new antioxidative compounds from natural products, three hundreds of plant extracts were screened. The ethyl acetate soluble fraction of methanol extract from Aster tataricus (compositae) showed significant antioxidative activity on the NBT superoxide scavenging assay. Three flavonoids, kaempferol (1), quercetin (2) and astragalin (3) and one monoterpene glycoside, shionoside A (4) were isolated by activity-guided fractionation. Their structures were determined by chemical and spectral analyse. Among these compounds, 2 and 3 showed potent antioxidant activity, while compounds 1 and 4 were inactive (IC_(50)>120 ㎍/ml). In addition we confirmed the compounds 1~3 suppress the separation of the hIL-6. Compound 3 was isolated for the first time from this plant.
