Abstract
This study is aimed at understanding the relations among self-esteem, spiritual wellbeing, depression and life of quality of nurses caring cancer patients, and providing basic data on self-care to manage depression and to enhance life of quality of nurses caring cancer patients.
The data for this study were collected through a research which was conducted to 138 nurses who took care of cancer patients in cancer centers of a university hospital in Hwasun-gun and 2 university hospitals in Gwangju City, from September 20 to October 15, 2004.
As for research tools, the Self-Esteem measurement tool developed by Rosenberg and adapted by Jeon Byeong-je (1974), the Spiritual Wellbeing measurement tool developed by Paloutizian and Ellison (1982) and adapted and revised by Choi Sang-soon (1990), the Depression measurement tool developed by Zung and revised and adjusted by Tae Yeong-suk (1985), the life of quality measurement tool (WHOQOL -BREF) developed by Min Seong-gil (2000) in accordance with the guidelines of WHOQOL.
The data collected were processed using SPSS/PC to descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, scheffe post-validation test, Pearson´s correlation and stepwise multiple regression.
The research results are as follows.
1. The mean score of self-esteem of nurses caring cancer patients was 30.32. As a result of analyzing self-esteem in accordance with general properties of each subject, statistically meaningful difference was seen in religion (F=2.844, p=.040), position (F=3.787, p=.025), and satisfaction as nurse (F=6.206, p=.003).
2. The mean score of spiritual wellbeing of nurses caring cancer patients was 82.72. As a result of analyzing spiritual wellbeing in accordance with general properties of each subject, statistically meaningful difference was seen in religion (F=16.748, p=.000), education (F=4.699, p=.011), position (F=4.558, p=.012), and satisfaction as nurse (F=13.221, p=.000).
3. The mean score of depression of nurses caring cancer patients was 41.14. As a result of analyzing depression in accordance with general properties of each subject, statistically meaningful difference was seen in marriage (t=6.771, p=.010), age (F= 2.740, p=.046), working period (F=2.735, p=.046), position (F=5.687, p=.004), satisfaction as nurse (F=13.475, p=.000), and monthly salary (F=5.049, P=.002).
4. The mean score of life of quality of nurses caring cancer patients was 83.04. As a result of analyzing life of quality in accordance with general properties of each subject, statistically meaningful difference was seen in marriage (t=5.263, p=.023), working period (F=3.214, p=.025), position (F=3.336, p=.039), and satisfaction as nurse (F=12.293, p=.000).
5. As for the correlations among self-esteem, spiritual wellbeing, depression and life of quality of nurses caring cancer patients, self-esteem (r=.621, p=.000) and spiritual wellbeing(r=.513, p=.000) were in a statistically meaningful correlation, and self-esteem and depression (r=-.656, p=.000) were in a reverse correlation, supporting the hypotheses in this study.
6. As a result of multiple regression analysis in order to confirm predictable factors to give influence to life of quality of nurses caring cancer patients, depression turned out to explain life of quality by 44.5%, self-esteem by 5.9%, and satisfaction as nurse by 2.7%.
Given those results, this study is expected to increase understanding on self-esteem and spiritual wellbeing of nurses caring cancer patients, to enhance life of quality of nurses by helping relieve their depression, and to help them provide better care to cancer patients. In this respect, it is recommended to develop arbitrative programs to enhance self-esteem and spiritual wellbeing of nurses, and supportive programs to reduce depression of nurses caring cancer patients.
