Abstract

〈Shim-Cheong-Jeon〉, which is one of the best Korean classics, shows a variety of aspects in transmission, subjects of acceptance, and research trend. For transmission, it was orally transmitted by civilians or exorcists, or many different versions of the work were transmitted by narrators or calligraphers. As time goes by, it has been adapted in many diverse forms such as play, movie, novel, ballet, opera, art, performance by foreigners, and even parody. It is a typical Korean work that every Korean can accept and enjoy without distinction of age or sex. Further, it is the first Korean typical literary work to be contacted by foreigners who are interested in Korean culture. Though other classics have been loved by the people, it is hard to find as much lovely classic as . It has been researched and transformed in many different styles. Therefore, it is thought that there is no need to discuss about the size of acceptance, but to study on diversity in its form. It is hardly necessary to say that that provides various materials for further research holds a high position in Korean literary history. However, we need specific analysis on what makes this work have such diversity: because of its theme, its thought, its plot or any other reason. The whole value of this work can not be explained in the following aspect: three factors such as Confucianism focusing on filial piety that has a deep root in Korean life, Korean Buddhism having its own distinctive characteristics, and Taoism with a background of the Heaven and the Dragon Palace are harmoniously combined into a cubic structure. This study integrates previous studies on to systematically understand the novel, and to apply various results of the studies on ancient novels to individual works. Specifically, this study identifies the production and transmission process of several original narratives as bases of and its themes that have been established by an influence of thoughts. Then, it examines the structure to identify its existence and external form and further, how it is dissolved in contemporary culture. This study was planned to identify the formation process of original narratives. The base of this study is decided as filial piety that has been the most frequently mentioned and later, will be gradually expanded to narratives of sacrificial offering of human bodies, conception dream, the Dragon Palace and gaining eyesight. Of course, there is no reliable evidence that the narratives have chronological connections in their production processes or are organically connected in their structures. However, in terms of Korean descriptive literature that has relied on oral transmission for such a long time, shows amazing combination of diverse styles of many narratives. So, this study examines its formation process after integrating such diverse styles. Next, this study examines the theme and thoughts of the work. Like other novels, has its own ultimate theme intended by the author, but arguments to confirm the theme still continues. That is to say, according to different standpoints to look at , its theme and thought can be completely differently interpreted. This is because this work has been transmitted in two different ways: written version and Pansori version, and there is a serious difference in their tendencies and literary styles between the two versions. So, the theme or aesthetic consciousness in are not consistently maintained, and in particular, it is thought that the Pansori version is settled to maintain a conservative theme through several transformations. However, there are previous attempts to deal with the work in terms of problem-solving in consideration of the difficulties of theme identification. If a theme is revealed in a relation between parts and the entire body of its epic structure, problems are revealed in a relation between parts and parts, the process of which can be used as a preparatory work to identify a theme. It is an evidence that discussion about its theme continues in various standpoints. The structural characteristics of the work is followed by examination of the theme and thoughts. However, because of diversity of , its structural analysis is complicating. Difference in each version, difference between parts and the entire body of the work, and individual standpoints of the structural analysis make the examination harder. That is, it is impossible to explain a certain structure in a word. This study is to examine a circular structure, focusing on a circular style in structural characteristics. It is referred from the following systematic classification: ' circulation between unreality and reality' based on whole life of Sim Chong and ' circulation within real world' based on Sim Chong's blind father's life. Based on such aspect, this study is to introduce characteristics of vertical and horizontal structures to find structural characteristics and apply them for the analysis of the work. Finally, this study is to prepare activation plans of ancient literature and discuss contemporary cultural variation and popularization of . In particular, it is to investigate its real variation that the heroine of the novel becomes a heroine of the festival. Gokseong county, Jeonnam creates cultural products using Sim Chong as a materials of regional festival. Here, both positive and negative aspects brought by popularization of ancient novels can be examined. Moreover, it is expected that the future configuration and variation standpoints of can be identified. As identified in describing the purpose of the study, this study accepts diverse methods to pursue generalization and universality of the results. So, based on existing data and results of the previous studies, it discusses the processes of production and variation. For this, the study focuses on bibliographical theories and orally-transmitted literature. It is based on the general literary logic to identify the theme and structure, but it also uses theological nature or special structural analysis. The study refers studies on cultural anthropology and folklore. However, they are only means to complement partial logics, and this study insists a basic suggestion that it is a literary study to analyse an individual work.
