Abstract
프로이트가 대담 후 말한 것처럼 그의 그림들은 오히려 무의식을 가장한 의식의 결과였다고 할 수 있다.|As the stand point of surrealism emancipated human from the restraint of civilization and clarified the unconscious world, repressed in arrogance of reason, it became an opportunity to fundamentally renew the general perception about human.
In the spirit of the times, absorbed in the spirit and method of the surrealism, Dali was affected by psychoanalysis and surrealism view of art of Freud, and was interested in the subconsciousness of genuine human. Freud’s writings on Dream and Unconsciousness gave an answer to agony and sexual illusion which afflicted him from childhood.
As this thesis examines what is the paranoiac-critical method of Salvador Dali and its backgrounds, I wish to analyze the meaning of what the world of visual illusion of Dali shows.
From two years ago before Dali joined the surrealism group, he insisted that the only ambition which I cherished in painting was to dig the truth of visualization, and he tried to show a detail irrationality, namely, the unreasonable things by image of high resolution.
There was basic agreement with Dali that painting should be at the service of the labyrinths of the mind, unconscious and conscious. But, whereas for them, the visual means were ideally meager or transparent - the rudimentary record of a dream, chance gestures, found objects - Dali increasingly persuaded himself of the imperative to make his paintings as convincing, deceptive and illusionistics possible.
His aim, put crudely, was to give form to the formless and invisible, to dreams, reveries, delusions, desires and fears. His ambition, both in what he was aware of depicting and what remained fortuitous and concealed was to make the world of the imagination "as objectively evident, consistent, durable, as persuasively, cognoscitively, and communicably thick as the exterior world of phenomenal reality." His desire to give substance to the phantoms destined always to remain virtual led to one of the most sustained investigations into the relationship between vision, perception and representation of the century.
Thus, in order to give a form to the formless and the unseen, namely, dream, illusion, delusion, desire and fear, not a general viewpoint but paranoiac-thought, namely, the world of delusion could not help being introduced, that is the very paranoiac-critical method Dali regarded his paranoiac-critical method as a form of unreasonable perception, based on temporary delirium of analysis, in the genius diary that he himself wrote (1932), “Comprehensively speaking, the paranoiac-critical method is a method which strictly systemize more hallucinatory, distractive illusion and material, it is to make my obsession, reached in dangerous level more creative.” he said.
In other words, the paranoiac-critical method is to do an unexpected analysis to the actually, elaborately drawn usual things and is to express the sub consciousness as a double image. In here, the critical activity is to add a critical analysis over distractive phenomenon and is to clear up a truth from unreasonable things.
Although Dali by his unique method tried to approach the unconscious world, it is true that he introduced Freud’s unconscious factors to picture plane. However, it seems that Dali, by his subjective will, proposed another reality called the conquest of the unreasonable things to transcend Freud’s theory.
As he spoke after an interview, his paintings can speak the results of consciousness, disguised as a unconsciousness.
