바느질기법을 이용한 프리테크닉에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 섬유예술을 비롯하여 예술전반에 적용되고 있는 바느질 기법에 관한 테크닉과 적용 사례들을 통하여 섬유예술 기법의 하나인 바느질 기법이 예술전반에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는가에 대하여 살펴보고 이를 본 연구자의 작품에 직접 응용하였다. 이를 위하여 먼저 바느질의 기원과 그 발달에 관한 역사적인 탐구를 개괄적으로 제시하였다. 이 과정에서 바느질은 인간의 의복 착용과 더불어 시작되었으며, 과거에는 단순히 여성성을 상징하는 여성적인 작업이라고 여겨져 왔던 바느질이 오늘날에 이르러서는 여성의 자기표현과 함께 예술로서의 바느질기법을 발달시킨 주요한 수단이 되어왔다는 사실을 밝혔다. 과거에는 손바느질이 여성을 도구화하는 여성성의 상징적 작업이었으나, 이러한 손바느질이 오늘날에 이르러서는 페미니즘의 발달과 여성의식의 발전으로 인하여 여성을 제한하고 가두는 수단이 아닌, 한 인간으로서 여성의 위치와 자기표현의 방법을 나타내는 주요한 예술적 가치를 지닌 작업이 되고 있다는 사실이다. 또한 바느질의 역사를 살피면서 기계화에 의한 재봉틀의 발명과 함께 바느질의 기법과 그 표현방식도 함께 발달해왔으며, 한때는 수공적인 손바느질이 기계바느질에 밀려 도외시되었으나, 오늘날에 이르러서는 바느질의 다양성과 조화를 통하여 손바느질과 기계바느질이 예술적 표현의 영역에 풍부함과 다양함을 더하게 되었다는 점을 다루었다. 이와 함께 바느질 기법은 오늘날 다양한 예술분야 전반에 걸쳐 적용되고 있다는 점에서 동양과 서양의 바느질 기법의 역사와 종류, 그리고 그에 따른 바느질 기법을 비교적 자세히 다루어보고자 하였다. 이러한 시도를 통하여 한 땀 한 땀 인내와 정성으로 작품을 만드는 여성 특유의 끈기와 섬세함, 예술적 감각이 바느질을 통하여 표현되어질 때 작품의 입체감과 질감, 섬유라는 소재의 부드러움과 조형미가 작품 속에 구현될 수 있음을 살펴보았다. 특히 현대에 와서 많은 작가들이 섬유를 소재로 한 작품을 발표하였는데 각각의 작품들을 바느질 기법과 관련하여 살펴보았다. 이와 함께 이러한 바느질 기법을 이용한 작품의 발달은 여성의 자기표현에 있어서도 그 표현양식과 내용이 함께 발달하여 보다 더 자유로운 예술적 창작을 가능케 했다는 점을 살펴보았다. 특히 페미니즘의 발달과 더불어 여성의 표현영역도 개인의 여성성에 대한 저항에서부터 사회 문화 전반에 걸친 의식의 변화에로 확대되어 예술표현의 영역에 자유로움과 풍부함을 더해왔다는 점을 기술하였다. 본 연구자도 작품을 제작함에 있어서 이와 같은 바느질기법을 응용하여 보다 더 자유롭고 의미 있는 창작을 가능케 할 수 있다는 시도를 하였다. 특히 ‘유희’라는 주제를 통하여 과거의 여성들이 바느질이라는 수단을 통한 자기표현의 간접적 도구로 이용하거나, 페미니즘적 시각 속에서 여성의식 변화를 통한 사회적 저항을 표현하는 상징적 시도를 하였던 점과는 달리, 한 인간으로서의 자유로운 ‘유희’를 꿈꾸는 무한한 자기표현이 섬유예술에서도 얼마든지 구현될 수 있다는 점을 부각시키고자 하였다. 본 연구자는 바느질이나 섬유라는 소재가 더 이상 여성을 제한하고 가두는 것이 아닌, 인간의 자유로운 사상과 감정을 마음껏 발산할 수 있는 매우 흥미로운 표현기법이라는 점에 착안하여 작품을 제작하였다. 이러한 작품은 그 결과물 이전에 있게 되는 과정으로서의 작업이 더욱 매력적이며, 작가의 땀과 인내, 섬세함, 수많은 상상과 시도를 통한 자유로운 표현, 질감, 입체감 등에 있어서 다른 어떠한 기법보다도 많은 장점을 지닌 것이라고 보았다. 본 논문의 모든 과정 속에는 이러한 연구자의 마음이 함께 담겨져 있다.|This study examines how the sewing technique which is one of the fiber art techniques can be applied in the whole art through the fiber art and the sewing techniques applied to the whole art and its examples; and this was actually applied to the writer's works. For this to be done; the origin of sewing and the historical examination regarding its development has been generally presented first. Here, sewing was started along with the human beings' wearing clothes; and sewing was considered as the feminine works simply symbolizing femininity in the past, but now it has been major means to develop the sewing technique along with the women's self-expression. Needlework in the past was the symbolic work of femininity which implements women; through the development of feminism and the enhancement of woman's awareness, now it is the work containing main artistic value which displays the woman's status as one person and the method of self-expression, not as the means to confine and lock up themselves. Likewise, in examining the history of sewing, it is learned that the sewing technique and its way of expression as well as the invention of the sewing machine due to the mechanicalization have been developed so far; and although the manual needlework was disregarded due to the mechanical sewing for a while, the manual needlework and the mechanical needlework now add richness and variety to the scope of artistic expressions through the needlework's diversity and harmony. In addition, by the fact that the sewing technique is generally applied to various artistic fields today; it is also indicated that the history and the types of the sewing techniques in Asia and in Western countries, and the details of its sewing techniques accordingly. Through this kind of attempts, it is learned that the solidity and texture of the work, the softness and figurative beauty of the materials can be embodied in the work only when the women's own perseverance, delicacy and artistic sense which make the work with the patience and the elaborateness through each stitch. A lot of artists, in the modern times particularly, released works of fibers, and each work's sewing technique is studied. Furthermore, the development of the works using the sewing technique makes more liberal artistic creation possible with the enhancement in the expression means and its contents of women's self-expression. What's more, it is also described that the women's expression scope along with the development of feminism also expands from the resistance against the individual femininity to the change of awareness over the whole societyand culture; thus it brought freedom and richness to the scope of artistic expression. In producing the work by the writer in person, it is displayed that more liberal and meaningful creation can be made possible by applying such sewing techniques. Through the theme of 'amusement', unlike the women in the past who used the sewing as the indirect tool for self-expression or as the symbolic attempts expressing the social resistance though the change of women's awareness in the perspective of feminism; the point that the unlimited self-expression dreaming of liberal 'amusement' as one human being can be made whenever they want is highlighted. The writer has produced the work by understanding the point that the sewing or the material called fiber is not something that confines or locks up women, but the very interesting expressing technique which makes the human being's liberal ideology and sentiment emit out freely. Such work has more appealing point in the working in the process before the completed product comes out; and it has much more merits than any other techniques in free-style expression, texture, solidity etc. through the artist's sweat and patience, delicacy, numerous imaginations and attempts. The writer's such sentiment mentioned in the above is contained in all the process of this study.
