Abstract

Occlusal pit and fissure caries account for a high proportion of total burden among children after tooth eruption. Dental sealants are applied to the pits and fissures of teeth to inhibit and prevent dental caries. School-based dental sealant program as a public oral health work in primary school children is designed to prevent occlusal caries and to improve oral health. Effectiveness of sealant is directly related to sealant retention since caries will not occur if the sealant remains in place completely covering the pits and fissure of occlusal area. Subjected teeth were chosen 65 pairs of sound first molars in primary school children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship retention rate with time lapsed of sealing body and after described the pattern of outline change, preventive effect and caries incidence rate during 60 months. Obtained results were as follows : 1. The full retention rate of 5 years by each curing method, was 29.63% by autopolymerized type and 63.16% by light-cured type, respectively. 2. The outline of sealing body was similar to be changed pattern. 3. Caries prevention rate of sealed group were 87.5% in 12 months; 73.1% in 36 moths, and 63.8% in 60 months. 4. Marginal probabilities of sealed permanent first molars were 73.8% in sealed group and 29.2% in non sealed group after 60months. These results suggest that considering the periodic recheck of sealed tooth per 12 months is more effective in school-based sealant programme.
