With English as a Foreign Language in Korea, composition courses present a variety of challenges to both students and instructors. Non-native speakers need more spacial schooling not only in grammar and syntax but also in cultural assumptions of the target language country and rhetorical convention of English discourse, which often markedly differs from Korean writing style.
So, this thesis aims to investigate the proper way of teaching writing skill using English literary text: Araby and to provide practical teaching plans in secondary school classroom.
In the second part, it discusses two theoretical backgrounds: one is principles of teaching English writing skill and the other is about a literary text. First, to explore effective ways of writing skill, it shows several types such as controlled writing, guided writing and free writing. It also provides how to teach writing and a suggested procedure of writing. Next, the literary text has a lot of benefits to EFL/ESL students because they can receive elegant example of linguistic forms and insight into the culture. Moreover, students recognize the worth of literature because of its aesthetic qualities and its relevance to their own lives. In particular, this thesis uses the short story, Araby since it told by a same age narrator, conveys a strong sympathy such as an unrequited love. As a result, students receive a stimulus and use it to write their mind and opinions in a natural way.
In the third part, based on those theoretical backgrounds, this thesis designs models of writing instruction using the short story, Araby, which consists of 5 periods for high school students. The models include several methods in each controlled way, guided way, and free way as well as examples of lesson plans.
In conclusion, this thesis suggests that literary texts are helpful for students to improve their writing skill as well as an important cornerstone for enlarging their view of the world. However, to use literary texts successfully, the ceaseless efforts are needed by both teachers and students.
