Pottery is one of the areas creating a culture by making clay encounter fire.
Over time, the function and properties have been developed variably, and its areas have been expanding unlimitedly. As a result of repeated evolutions from the practical use as a container of water or crops, pottery has expanded its use into industrial, modern, environmental, and architectural ones, and in particular, architectural pottery used for housing space has contributed to making our environment more comfortable and pleasant.
This study is designed to explore uniqueness and aesthetic elements sought for by people today by using celadon porcelain as a traditional culture for tiles essential to modern architecture. Today, people seek for better and unique one, as their living standards are growing higher with increased income, with various conveniences.
In most cases, design plays a key role in leading consumers to make a decision on purchase. Among others, a tile, which is made of natural material, clay, to meet demands of consumers, is open to endless development of design and invaluable to study.
The author realized that celadon porcelain as one of the Korean traditional cultural heritages has limitless value for study, in the course of the study examining it from a new perspective and producing a new design. The study proposes a new design meeting the desires of consumers with various methods of making celadon porcelain, glazes, and patterns.
The development of celadon tiles will lead to the unique life of individuals. Furthermore, they will become a type of culture with an architectural building by using them as an architectural celadon tile. Considering the tendency of development in architectural celadon today, celadon tiles have been escaped from the concept of tiles and have been developed into those with strong formative character. In addition, the natural material of 'soil' will ease the outer appearance of cold and hard modern architectural buildings smoothly or will be in harmony with the buildings. Therefore, the decorativeness of architectural celadon that can give a sense of visual pleasure to the viewer will create a space close to nature, thus playing a social role by providing people with psychological space.
The study showed that handwork, instead of mass production, resulted in good outcome, by reducing bending of the board and defects. The author expects this study to be a great help for those who do research on celadon porcelain, architectural pottery, and new tile design.
