‘지젝’으로 읽는 ‘조지 플로이드’ 현상 : ‘기원’의 기원성에 관해

Abstract

현상과 본질, 기원과 결말, 선과 악, 주체와 객체 등의 이분법은 서양 사유의 기본 틀을 이룬다. 이분법적 사고는 필연적으로 배제적 구조를 갖는다. 한 번 추방된 자는 다시 기존 질서에 편입되지 못한다. 이러한 사고방식은 여러 현상으로 드러난다. 국가 차원에서는 제국주의로, 문화 차원에서는 인종주의로, 성별과 관련해서는 성차별로 나타난다. 그러나 이항대립구조는 그 자체로 불안하고 불완전하다. 본질이 있을 수 있는 것은 오직 현상을 통해서다. 기원이 있을 수 있는 것은 결과가 기원을 사후적으로 설명해주기 때문이다. 선의 존재는 악의 존재를 상정함으로써만 가능하다. 만약 본질이 있다면 본질 자체가 자기 분열적이라는 점일 뿐이다. 선과 악은 선 내부의 악, 악 내부의 선과 겹쳐있다. A도 B도 아닌 지점, A이면서 B인 지점이 바로 ‘괴물성’의 지점이다. 조지 플로이드의 죽음 이후 나타나는 수많은 사건은 단지 자유와 평등의 보편성을 주장하는 것일 뿐 아니라, 법 또는 국가체계의 기원성이 그 자체로 불완전한 것임을, 사후적으로 구성된 신화임을 표지하는 현상들이다. 역사란 언제나 새로이 생성 중임을 말하는 ‘유일무이한 중간적 상황’, 즉 공백에 개입하는 것이 지젝의 ‘까다로운 주체’다.

Dichotomies such as appearance and essence, origin and ending, good and evil, subject and object are the basic framework of Western thought. Dichotomous thinking inevitably has an exclusionary structure. Those who are once deported can never be incorporated into the existing order. This way of thinking manifests itself in a number of phenomena; imperialism at the national level, racial discrimination at the cultural level, and sexism when it comes to gender. However, the structure of binary opposition is in itself insecure and incomplete. Essence can only exist through appearances. Origin can always only be (re-)constructed ex post facto. Good exists only through the introduction of evil. The only ‘essence’ is that essence is always self-split. The ‘monstrosity’ explains this very obscene point where good and evil lie upon one another. The numerous events occurred after the death of George Floyd do not only claim the universality of freedom and equality. These are the phenomena that indicate that the origin of the law or the national system is inseparable with violence. It is imperfect in itself and it is a post- constructed myth. It is the very 'ticklish subject' of Žižek that intervenes in this 'unique void situation' which claims that history is always being newly (re-)created.
