칸트의 계몽과 비판에 대한 푸코의 재해석

Abstract

푸코는 70년대 후반 이후 통치성과 주체화 문제의 맥락 속에서, 「계몽이란 무엇인가?」에 대한 독해를 중심으로 칸트의 계몽과 비판 개념을 재해석한다. 푸코는 칸트의 계몽 논문이 현재의 현재로서의 성격을 심문한다는 의미에서 ‘현재성의 철학’을 수행한다고 보는데, 이때 현재성의 철학은 주체성과 특이성에 의해 규정되는 현재의 가능성의 조건과 한계에 대한 비판을 수행한다는 점에서 다시 ‘우리 자신의 비판적 존재론’으로 정의된다. 이처럼 계몽을 우리 자신의 비판적 존재론으로 재개념화하는 작업은 칸트 비판 개념의 재정식화 또한 요구하는바, 푸코는 칸트의 비판을 초월적 주체의 본성적 구조 분석에 기반한 ‘진리의 분석학’인 담론으로서의 비판과 주체의 자율적 자기구성을 위한 계보학적 탐구와 실험을 의미하는 에토스로서의 비판으로 이원화하고, 스스로를 후자의 비판적 전통에 위치시킨다. 이렇게 재정식화되어 결합된 계몽과 비판은 특정한 체계적 교설이나 이론이 아니라 우리 자신의 역사적 변형을 위한 항구적 운동으로 이해된다.

Foucault reinterprets Kant's concepts of enlightenment and critique in the context of governmentality and subjectification issues since the late 70s, with a focus on reading "What is Enlightenment?" Foucault regards Kant's enlightenment paper as carrying out the 'philosophy of actuality' in the sense that it interrogates the presentness of the present. In turn, the philosophy of actuality is defined as the 'critical ontology of ourselves' in that it carries out a critique of the conditions and limits of the actuality defined by subjectivity and singularity. This reconceptualization of enlightenment as critical ontology of ourselves requires a reformulation of Kant's concept of critique, so Foucault introduces duality into Kant's critique: on the one hand, critique as discourse, an 'analytic of truth' based on the analysis of the nature of the transcendental subject, on the other, critique as ethos, a genealogical inquiry and experimentation for the autonomous self-constitution of subject. And he places himself within the tradition of latter, i.e., the critical ontology of actuality. This reformulation and synthesis of enlightenment and critique should be construed not as a specific systematic doctrine or theory but as a permanent movement for our own historical transformation.
