‘재난인문학 정립’을 위한 인문학의 함의와 역할에 대한 분석

Abstract

‘재난인문학(Disaster Humanities)’이란 용어는 우리 학계에서 아직 생소하다. 인간이 행복을 추구하는 일반적인 삶의 의도와 바람과 상치되는 재난에 대하여 인문학적 관점에서 이해하고, 해석하고, 그 대응의 방법을 찾아나가려는 시도라고 할 수 있다. ‘재난인문학’이란 개념이 실질적 의미를 갖기 위해서는 재난이란 고통스럽고 비극적인 현실의 문제에 대하여 ‘인문학’은 어느 지점에서 개입이 가능한 것인가에 대한 답을 하는 것이 우선되어 보인다. 그리고 한 걸음 더 나아가 여기서 말하는 인문학이란 어떤 함의(含意)를 담고 있으며, 그 역할은 무엇인지에 대한 논의가 이어져야 할 것으로 보인다. 현대사회는 위험사회라고 정의된다. 그러한 위험사회 속에서는 인류를 포함한 전 지구의 생태계가 파멸의 위기에 직면할지 모른다는 불안감과 위기감이 늘 우리를 압박하게 된다. 이러한 ‘위험’이 현실화하여 ‘재난’이 되는 것을 방지하기 위해서는 인간의 기존의 삶의 패러다임과 세계관을 변화시킬 방법을 마련하여야 한다. 만약 세계관의 대전환이 이루어지지 않는다면, 인류의 장래는 어둡다고 할 수 있다. 사실 인류의 운명을 결정할 수 있는 것은 인류 이외에는 아무것도 없기 때문이다. 바로 이 지점에서 이러한 ‘위험’을 내재한 재난의 상황에 윤리 철학, 그리고 인문학이 개입할 가능성이 열려 있는 것이다. 지금의 이른바 ‘위험사회’의 ‘불안’을 제거하기 위해서는 우리의 기존의 삶의 방식과 가치관의 전환을 요구하지 않을 수 없는 것이다. 그러한 가치관의 전환은 인간의 의지에 호소할 수밖에 없다. 인간의 의지 발현은 인간의 이상 실현을 위한 것이고, 그 이상은 바로 ‘내재적 도덕성’에 기반해야만 한다. ‘내재적 도덕성’에 기반한다는 것은 인간이 자신의 존재를 긍정함과 동시에 타자성을 인정하는 공존의식을 발현하는 것이다. 인간이 인간다움을 실현한다는 것은 자신만의 생존을 추구하는 이기적 욕망을 극복하고, 타자와 더불어 삶을 실현하는 것이다. 바로 이 부분에서 인문학의 역할이 드러나는 것이다.

The term “Disaster Humanities” is still new in our academic area. It is an attempt to understand, interpret and find ways of responding to disasters that conflict with the wishes and the intentions of human beings in pursuit of happiness. In order for the concept of Disaster Humanities to have practical meaning, it is imperative to answer the question at which point the humanities could involve into the disasters which mean painful and tragic parts of our realities. Furthermore, it seems that which implications the humanities here have and what its role need to be discussed consistently. In such society, the anxiety and sense of crisis that the entire ecosystem including human beings may face destruction always suppress us. To prevent this risk from being reality and turning into disaster, we must find the ways to revise existing paradigms and perspectives of the world. If nothing has changed in the view of our world, the future of mankind would be dark. At this point where disastrous situations have potential dangers, there is possibility of involvement of ethical philosophy and the humanities. In fact, there is nothing but humanity who determine the fate of mankind. In order to eliminate the current “risk society”, we cannot help but call for a shift in our established way of life and the values. Such changes of the values depend on the will of human. The manifestation of human will be for realization of human ideals, which must be based on ‘internal morality’. Standing ‘internal morality’ on the basis means a sense of coexistence in which humans not only affirm their own existences but acknowledge otherness. To overcome selfish desire to only pursue one’s own survival and then realize life together suggests that human beings achieve humanity. This is where the role of the humanities is revealed.
