한국 역사 다큐멘터리 영화의 오늘 : 은폐된 역사를 기록하는 다양한 미학적 실천들

Abstract

광주학살 비디오에서 촉발된 한국 다큐멘터리 영화는 태생에서부터 민주주의의 산물이자 동반자였다. 역사 다큐멘터리 영화 역시 주류 역사에서 은폐되고 왜곡된 역사를 알려내고 바로잡는 역할로 출발해 각 시기별로 계몽적, 성찰적, 미학적 시기를 통과하며 역사를 다루고 있다. 이 글은 2010년대 한국 역사 다큐멘터리 영화에서 드러나는 미학적 실천에 보다 초점을 맞추어, 동시대 역사 다큐멘터리 영화의 현주소를 짚어보고자 한다. 특히 역사의 보조물로 혹은 소재와 주제 중심으로 역사 다큐멘터리 영화를 접근하는 방식에 문제의식을 가지고, 역사 다큐멘터리 영화를 역사쓰기와 영상예술의 접경으로서 접근하고자 한다. 동시대 역사 다큐멘터리 영화는 과거사에 대한 자명한 지식으로서 역사에 머물지 않고, 왜곡된 역사를 폭로하는 것에서만 머물지 않고, 현재 역사 담론을 풍성하게 하고 인문학적 사유를 확대하고 공감하는 차원까지 확장하는 다양한 미학적 실천을 시도하고 있다. 이 글은 그 동시대 역사 다큐멘터리 영화가 가지는 현재성과 공간성에 보다 초점을 맞추면서, 시론적 연구의 한계를 각 양식을 대표하는 구체적 작품 분석을 통해 실증적으로 극복하고자 한다. 최근 급부상하고 있는 저널리즘 다큐멘터리 영화 양식에서 (최승호, 2016), 현장투쟁을 다룬 액티비즘 다큐멘터리 영화에서 (박배일, 2017), 나를 경유한 사적 다큐멘터리 영화에서 (이원우, 2017)를 통해 역사쓰기 방식을 분석하면서 각 작품이, 각 양식이, 나아가 동시대 역사 다큐멘터리 영화가 시도하는 미학적 실천을 살펴보고자 한다.

This paper exams the contemporary Korean historical documentary films in terms of aesthetic practices. Korean documentary film were born into the struggle of Korean Democracy and had followed the flow of Korean Democratic history. This paper focused on three films of three modal categories: journalistic documentary, activism documentary, and personal documentary that investigates the historical causes and contexts giving birth to those documentary modes, and examines the effects of their modes of address. Since 2010, Korean historical documentary has constructed counter-memory through ‘presence’ and ‘space’. Also historical documentary film with personal memory and experience has been mobilized to challenge official history. Today’s Korean historical documentary approached the affect instead of historical information and accusation.
