김기림의 시론과 ‘근대정신’의 복원

Abstract

김기림은 그의 시론에서 모순된 태도를 자주 보여준다. 한편으로는 모더니즘의 옹호자이면서 다른 한편으로는 모더니즘이 기교주의로 전락하고 있다면서 비판적인 태도를 보이기도 한다. 시대정신의 반영을 강조할 때 그는 19세기의 문학을 부정하고 20세기의 문학으로 모더니즘을 옹호한다. 문명비판을 강조할 때 그는 모더니즘이 기교를 내세워 문명을 반영하는 데만 치중한다고 비판적 반응을 보인다. 모더니즘에 대한 김기림의 양면적 태도는 문명에 대한 이중적 태도의 반영이다. 그는 문명에 대한 감수와 문명에 대한 비판을 동시에 요구하기 때문이다. 따라서 문명감수만 강조하는 모더니즘, 문명비판에만 치중하는 낭만주의와 리얼리즘의 일면성을 비판하고, 양측의 공존을 제안하고 그것을 ‘전체시’로 명명한다. 전체시는 문명감수와 문명비판이라는 모순된 두 가지 태도의 종합을 지향하며, 김기림은 그것을 ‘근대정신’으로 이해한다. 그는 문명비판의 경향파와 문명감수의 모더니즘을 종합하는 전체시가 근대정신의 실현이라고 주장한다. 근대정신은 인간성과 지성이라는 두 가지 모순된 정서의 공존을 보여준 르네상스에서 발원한 것이다. 이후 모순된 정서는 흄의 제안을 따라 낭만주의와 고전주의로 재확인된다. 김기림은 낭만주의를 배제하고 고전주의를 복원하는 흄의 제안이 근대정신에 미치지 못한 것으로 판단한다. 이에 맞서 그는 낭만주의를 복원함으로써 고전주의 편향의 모더니즘을 보완하고, 근대정신을 회복하고자 한다. 서로 상반된 정신의 공존을 통해 작동하는 근대정신은 르네상스 이후로 사라졌었는데, 김기림은 그것을 전체시를 통해 회복하고자 한 것이다. 그의 전략은 고전주의 편향의 모더니즘에 낭만주의를 끌어들여 고전주의(모더니즘)와 낭만주의의 모순적 공생 관계를 유도하는 것이다. 그것은 모더니즘의 문명감수의 정신에 낭만주의의 문명비판의 정신을 추가함으로써 형성된다. 그러나 김기림이 복원하려는 낭만주의는 문명감수조차 거부하는 과거의 낭만주의가 아니라 문명감수의 정신을 초과하는 미래의 낭만주의이다. 따라서 김기림이 모더니즘에 도입하는 낭만주의 정신은 자본주의 문명에 대한 능동적 비판을 포함한다는 점에서 임화의 혁명적 낭만주의와 만난다. 결국 김기림의 전체시, 즉 모더니즘과 경향파의 종합은 모순을 통한 종합이라는 근대정신의 회복을 모색한 것이다.

Kim Ki-rim often shows contradictory attitudes in his poetic theory. On the one hand, he is a champion of modernism, while on the other hand, he is being critical of the fact that modernism is becoming a technologist. In emphasizing the reflection of the zeitgeist, he denies 19th century literature and espouses modernism as the 20th century literature. When he emphasizes the criticism of civilization, he becomes critical of modernism focused only on reflecting civilization with its technique. Kim Ki-rim's ambivalent attitude toward modernism is a reflection of his dual attitude toward civilization. Because he simultaneously demands acceptance of civilization and criticism of civilization. Therefore, he criticizes modernism emphasizing only the acceptance of civilization, and also the romanticism and realism that focuses only on criticism of civilization. He proposes coexistence of the two and calls it the 'total poetry'. The total poetry seeks to integrate the contradictory attitudes of acceptance of civilization with criticism of civilization. Kim Ki-rim regards it as a modern spirit. He insists the total poetry, which combines contradictory attitudes toward civilization, is the realization of a modern spirit. Modern spirit originated from the Renaissance, when the two contradictory emotions of humanity and intelligence were coexistence. Contradictory emotions are subsequently reconfirmed as romanticism and classicism, following Hume's suggestions. Kim Ki-rim believes Hume's proposal to restore classicism, excluding romanticism, is falling short of the modern spirit. In contrast, he seeks to compensate for the modernism of Classicism and to restore the modern spirit by recovering romanticism. The modern spirit of working through the coexistence of conflicting emotions has disappeared since the Renaissance, when Kim Ki-rim hoped to recover it throughout the total poetry. But the romanticism that Kim Ki-rim seeks to restore is not the past romanticism but the future romanticism that exceeds the acceptance of the civilization. Therefore, Kim Ki-rim meets up with the revolutionary Romanticism of Im Hwa in that the romantic spirit that Kim Ki-rim introduces in modernism includes active criticism of capitalist civilizations. Eventually, the total poetry of Kim Ki-rim, the synthesis of modernism and realism, was meant to restore the modern spirit of synthesis through contradiction.
