근대기 현실인식 및 개혁에 관한 불교와 하곡학의 교섭

Abstract

근대기 전통 지식인들은 서구 정신문화에 대응하여, 전통 사상의 정체성을 유지하면서 문명화라는 보편 질서를 확립하는 것을 시대적 의무로 삼았다. 이들은 조선의 사상과 문화 속에서 일본이 규정한 ‘종속성’, ‘의존성’을 부정할 수 있는 고유의 사상을 발굴하고 동시에 그 안에서 근대적 문명을 이끌어갈 보편 정신을 도출하려고 하였다. 이런 시도는 서구 학문뿐만 아니라, 유교, 불교, 고대 사상 등 다양한 사상의 섭취와 전통 철학 내 교섭으로 나타났다. 이런 양상을 잘 살펴볼 수 있는 대표적인 사례가 불교 승려인 박한영과 하곡학파인 이건방, 정인보의 사상적 교섭이다. 박한영과 이건방, 정인보는 근대의 신학문을 접하면서도 각각 불교와 하곡학이라는 전통 사상에 충실하였고 상호 학문적 배타성없이 공감과 교섭을 실현하였다. 박한영과 이건방, 정인보의 사상적 교섭은 1. 현실인식, 2. 민중인식, 3. 종교인식에서 확인할 수 있다. 이들의 현실인식은 공통적으로 虛學‧虛名‧假行‧僞行‧無實에 대한 비판과 眞知‧實行의 회복이라는 대안으로 연결된다. 또 민중 인식은 眞知 實行의 필수 조건이며 ‘福利’증진을 결과로 하였다. 이때 민중의 복리는 각각 진리 성취라는 측면의 정신적인 福利에서 물질적인 福利로 나아가는 것이며, 현실적으로 우리의 역사와 사적탐구를 통한 주체성의 회복으로 제시되었다. 그러나 종교 인식은 교섭을 통한 공감형성과는 다른 결과로 박한영과 정인보의 이견이 드러나는 부분이었다. 정인보는 依自와 利他에 기반한 救世와 護國이 조선 불교의 근본 정신이라고 하였지만, 박한영은 이 견해가 당시 민족주의와 군민주의를 지나치게 인식한 결과라고 비판했다. 새로운 사상적 지표와 현실적 대안을 세우기 위해 어떠한 학문적 당파성 없이 교류와 토론을 거듭하던 이들의 사상교섭은 갈등과 분열을 반복하는 현재 우리 사회에 시사하는 바가 크다.

In response to the Western mental culture, traditional intellectuals in the modern period aimed to establish a universal order of civilization while maintaining the identity of traditional thoughts. They sought to draw unique thoughts that can deny the “dependence” and reliance” set by Japan within the ideology and culture of Chosun, as well as a universal mentality that could lead modern civilization in it at the same time. This attempt was shown not only through Western studies, but also through the acquisition of various thoughts and traditional philosophy interactions, such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and other ancient thoughts. The main examples of these aspects are the ideological interactions among Park Han-young, the representative Buddhist monk of the period, as well as Lee Geon-bang and Jeong In-bo, who were scholars of the Wang Yangming School. While exploring new modern academics, Park Han-young, Lee Geon-bang, and Jeong In-bo were devoted to the traditional thoughts of Buddhism and Hagok Studies, and carried out empathy and interactions without mutual academic exclusion. The ideological interactions among Park Han-young, Lee Geon-bang, and Jeong In-bo can be seen in (1) awareness of the reality, (2) awareness of the people, and (3) religious awareness. Their awareness of the reality is connected to criticisms of the Study of Emptiness, Names of Emptiness, Deceitful Acts, Illegal Acts, and Vanity, as well as the alternatives of the recovery of True Knowledge and Practice. Also, the awareness of the people is a required condition to practice True Knowledge and aims to result in the improvement of ‘well-being’. Here, the people’s well-being moves from the mental well-being of truth and accomplishment toward physical well-being, and was suggested as the recovery of realistic independence through our history and ideological exploration. However, religious awareness showed contradicting opinions between Park Han-young and Jeong In-bo with different results from the formation of empathy through interactions. Park Han-young criticized the opinion of Jeong In-bo, who saw salvation and patriotism based on self-dependence and altruism, which were the fundamental mentality of Chosun Buddhism, as the result of being overly conscious of nationalism and people-centralism. The ideological interactions of these scholars, who repeatedly had exchanges and discussions among themselves without being academically partisan to develop a new ideological index and realistic alternative, have great implication on current society, which has continuous conflicts and divisions.
