도시 미학과 현대예술 : 리옹 시의 도시 계획 속 문화예술정책

Abstract

자본주의 사회는 건설, 개발, 풍요, 생산과 소비 등 거대한 근대화의 물결에 휩싸였으며, 그 이면에는 탈인간화, 범죄, 오염, 혼잡, 불평등, 소외 등을 야기한 야누스적인 메시지를 표출시켰다. 이러한 결과들은 물리적인 도시 그 자체에 있는 것이 아니라 ‘도시적 경험’ 속에 농축되어 있는 근대성과 사회 불평등을 야기하는 자본주의의 본질에 있다. 이러한 모든 특징들이 집약적으로 이루어지고, 근대 사회의 서로 다른 측면들이 가장 선명하고 구체적으로 드러나는 장소가 바로 도시이며, 도시 예술은 이러한 논쟁의 중심에 있다. 이 연구는 도시 공간 안에서 제기될 수 있는 문제들을 논의하기 위해 앙리 르페브르의 ‘사회적 공간’으로서 도시 공간의 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 특히 연구자는 르페브르가 근대 공간으로서 주목한 ‘추상 공간’에 대한 논의와 더불어 근대적 도시 공간의 한계에 대면해서 요구되는 예술적 실천에 주목했다. 다시 말해 우리는 근대적 공간의 한계, 사회적 변화와 소외 현상에 주목하면서, 후기 자본주의 사회에서 예술 역시 도시 공간 안에서 어떻게 추상화 되는지 분석했다. 하지만, 자본주의와 추상 공간이 진행되고 있는 현 상황에서, 진정한 예술은 여전히 자율성과 아방가르드 정신을 가지고 스스로 비판적 사유를 발현하며 제도권과 도시 공간에 대한 새로운 이해를 제시하며 탈소외의 전략을 보여줄 수 있을 것이다. 문제는 이들의 자율성을 보장하는 제도권의 태도와 정책의 보완이 시급하다. 따라서 이 연구는 지방의 도시 리옹의 구체적인 사례를 통해 이론적 논의를 확장시키고자 했다. 무엇보다도 정부에 의한 문화예술정책만이 도시 공간을 점유하고 있는 것이 아니라, 리옹시가 도시 공간의 사용자들의 다양한 차이를 받아들이면서 도시의 ‘열린’ 가능성을 어떻게 보여주는지 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 연구를 통해, 우리는 한국의 지역 예술가들이 스스로 자유롭게 도시 공간을 점유할 수 있고, 예술의 자율성과 다양한 예술적 표현이 보장받을 수 있는 영역이 확대되기를 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to present how art projects including the Biennale reveal the occurring mutations in the relations between urban societies and their environment. Until now, the urban spaces have been discussed in the perspective of functional and ornamental dimensions by the city designers and the urbanist. This tendency is being changed by laying emphasis on the qualitative dimension of urban spaces, that is, the passage from the space like decor to that of atmosphere, from the functional space to that of artistic quality. These changes are needed to be analyzed by aesthetic reflections on urban space, namely urban aesthetics. For this task, philosophical bases of Henri Lefebvre will be borrowed. By offering many components of attractiveness especially through various and activ participation of artists in the urban spaces, the case of the city of Lyon is so instructive to trace not only the recent mutations occurred in a systematic and administrative forms in the city, but also our attention to the artistic quality of public spaces. The problem of how contemporary art is used in the urban areas on the occasion of art projects, will be analyzed the development of contemporary art in public spaces. Through the empirical analysis of the city of Lyon, we can discover a efficient way to improve urban quality and to communicate the contemporary art with its public and local situation in Korea.
