오래된 미래, 마을의 감성적 근대성

Abstract

이 글의 과제는 지나간 마을의 경험공간과 기대지평 안에 이미 존재하지만 아직 도래하지 않은 ‘마을’이라는 경험공간과 기대지평이 오버랩 되는 순간에 포착되는 근대성의 계기들을 추적하면서 발굴해내는 것이다. 이것은 자본주의 위기의 진원지인 고도로 산업화된 도시의 해악 자체로부터 그 해악을 치유할 수단으로서 마을의 잠재적인 것과 가능한 것을 탐색하려는 시도이기도 하다. 달리 말하자면 한국 사회의 압축적 근대화 과정으로부터 비롯된 다양한 사회병리적 현상들을 치유할 수 있는 대안이면서 동시에 IMF 이래 신자유주의가 야기한 경제적 양극화와 그로 인해 고립된 개인의 원자화 현상을 극복할 수 있는 대안을 도시에서 경험적으로 재발견하고 이론적으로 구상하는 것이 이 글의 목표다. 이를 위해 나는 우선 70년대 새마을운동의 성과와 과오를 되짚어보고, 이어서 서구 근대화과정에서 도시의 근대성이 역사적으로 형성되고 변질되어가는 과정을 살펴볼 것이다. 마지막으로 나는 마을의 감성적 근대성에 대한 이론적 구상을 소개할 것이다.

The task of this article is to trace and discover the occasions of modernity that exists already in the space of experience and the horizon of expectation of the past village; which are captured in the overlapping area with the space of experience and the horizon of expectation called ‘village’, that has not arrived yet. It is also an attempt to explore the potential and the possible of the village as a means of healing that evils from the evils of the highly industrialized city, the epicenter of the crisis of capitalism. In other words, the aim of this article is to empirically rediscover and theoretically conceive an alternative in the city, which cure various social pathological phenomena stemmed from the process of modernization of korean society; an alternative, which overcome economic polarization and the resulting atomization of isolated individuals caused by neoliberalism since the IMF. To this end, I will first review the achievements and the mistakes of the Saemaul Movement in the 1970s, and then examine the modernity of the city in the process of western modernization and its historical formation and transformation. Finally, I will introduce a theoretical conception of the emotional modernity of a village.
