Abstract
CFRP composites have been widely used in the aerospace industry due to their excellent specific strength and specific stiffness. However, one of the technical issues related to use of CFRP composites in the aerospace industry is foreign object damage (FOD) which can cause unexpected destruction of materials. Therefore, a series of experiments were performed to clarify the effects of the FOD on the puncture characteristics of CFRP composites. In particular, comparisons of impact energy vs. puncture energy, impact energy vs. absorbed energy, and crack pattern for given impact energy have been made in this study with regards to the interface number of orthotropic CFRP laminates.
