- Abstract
- A wireless sensor network (WSN) is an emerging field comprising of sensor nodes as basic units. These sensor nodes have limited resources like power, memory etc. WSNs can be used to monitor the remote areas where recharging or replacing the battery power of sensor nods is not possible. Because of limited resources, The main issue of WSNs are to reduce the energy consumption and to extend the lifetime of network. Many flat and hierarchical protocols have been projected to energy-efficient routing protocol. Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is a basic energy efficient hierarchical routing protocol in WSN. In LEACH, cluster heads are selected and cluster is formed by joining non cluster head nodes. Member nodes transmit the data to respective cluster head and then, the cluster head is to transmit the gathered and aggregated data directly to the base station. This paper examines the performance of the existing LEACH protocol and gives an enhancement to it for energy efficiency. The proposed protocol improved existing LEACH algorithm by solving inverse transmission from nodes to cluster head for more shorten base station. Simulation results using Matlab show the proposed LEACH algorithm relatively reduce energy consumption and increase total lifetime of the wireless sensor network.
