유영국 추상회화에서의 숭고미 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 유영국의 추상미술 수용 및 그룹 운동을 통한 한국 모더니즘 미술의 토대 형성 과정을 살펴보았다. 그리고 1960년 이후의 작품을 대상으로 유영국 추상회화의 숭고미적 가치를 탐구하였다. 그 결과, 버크, 칸트 등의 숭고의 개념 및 요소, 그리고 동, 서양 구상 미술 및 미국 뉴욕화파 색면추상미술과의 비교를 통해 유영국 추상회화에 숭고미적 가치가 있음을 확인하였다. 유영국은 1930년대 중반 일본 유학 후 가장 전위적인 예술사조인 추상을 수용하고, 60여 년의 예술 인생에서 일관되게 추상을 추구하였다. 그의 작품은 시대의 변화에 조응하며 변증법적인 자기 변화와 혁신을 거듭하였다. 그리하여 마침내, 자연, 즉‘산’을 모티브로 한 유영국의 추상회화는 내적 정신을 구현하는 단계에 이르렀다. ‘신사실파’에서‘신상회’에 이르는 그룹 운동은 한국 모더니즘 미술의 토대가 되었다. 이를 통해 유영국의 삶과 예술은 한국 모더니즘운동과 추상미술의 역사와 그 궤적을 함께하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 따라서 그의 작품은 한국 근현대미술사에서 매우 중요한 가치를 가지고 있다. 유영국의 예술세계는 일본 활동기의 엄격한 기하학적 추상과 해방 이후 1959년까지의 자연 이미지의 도입과 검은 획선에 의한 색면의 시기를 거친다. 그리고 1960년 이후에는‘산’이라는 주제에 천착하여 다양한 조형과 마티에르, 색채에 대한 실험을 거듭하며 우주와 생명의 기운을 담아냈다. 필자는 1960년 이후 그의 작품의 핵심 키워드를‘비정형 기운생동’,‘기하학적 색면추상’,‘서정적 자연’으로 보았다.‘산’이라는 주제를 통해 한국 전통색을 재현하고, 우리의 자연과 정신세계를 담아내어 한국인으로서의 정체성을 구현한 점은 한국 근현대미술사적 의의가 크다고 할 것이다. 유영국의 추상회화는 서양의 낭만주의 회화, 동양의 산수화, 그리고 미국의 클리포드 스틸, 바넷 뉴먼, 마크 로스코의 작품과 같이 정신을 고양시키고, 황홀감을 준다. 이를 통해 유영국 회화의 숭고미적 가치를 확인하였다. 특히 유영국의 추상회화는 한국의 자연과 정신성이 내재되어 있는‘한국적 추상’의 결정체라는 것도 알 수 있었다. 본 논문은 유영국 추상회화에 색면추상으로서의 가치를 부여하여 유영국 추상회화의 숭고미적 가치를 밝혔다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.| This study explored the process of forming the foundation of Korean modernism art through the acceptance of abstract art of Yoo Youngkuk and the group movements. And I tried to explore the sublime aesthetic value of Yoo Youngkuk's abstract paintings by focusing on works since the 1960. As a result, comparing the concepts and elements of sublime such as Burke and Kant, as well as Eastern and Western conceptual art and New York painting, color-field abstract art in the United States, I confirmed the sublime aesthetic value in Yoo Youngkuk's abstract paintings. After studying in Japan in the mid-1930s, Yoo Youngkuk accepted abstract art, the most avant-garde art, and consistently pursued abstraction in his 60 years of art life. His works have undergone dialectical self-transformation and innovation in response to the changes of the times. And finally, the abstract paintings of Yoo Youngkuk with the motif of nature, that is, 'mountain', reaches the stage of embodying the inner spirit. And the group movement from "New Realism Group(Sinsashilpa)" to "New Shape Group(Sinsanghoe)" became the foundation of Korean modern art. Through this, we can see that Yoo Youngkuk's life and art are intertwined with the history and trajectory of the Korean modern art movement and abstract art. Therefore, his works have a very important value in the history of modern and contemporary Korean art. And the art world of Yoo Youngkuk goes through a period of strict geometric abstraction during the Japanese period, the introduction of natural images from liberation(1945) to 1959, and a period of color-field by black lines. Since the 1960, he concentrated on the theme of mountains, experimenting with various forms, matieres and colours to capture the spirit of space and life. Since the 1960, the keywords of his works are‘Non-formal Energy vitality’, ‘geometric color-field abstraction’, ‘Lyrical Nature’. The traditional Korean color was reproduced through the theme of‘mountain’. In addition, it is of great significance in the history of modern and contemporary art in Korea that it embodies our identity as a Korean by capturing our natural and spiritual world. Yoo Youngkuk's abstract paintings enhance the spirit and give a sense of ecstasy, such as romantic paintings in the West, landscape paintings in the East, and works by Clifford Steele, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko in the United States. Through this, it was possible to confirm the sublime value of Yoo Youngkuk's abstract paintings. In particular, it can be seen that Yoo Youngkuk's abstract paintings is the crystal of "Korean abstraction" in which Korean nature and spirituality are inherent. This paper will be able to find its significance in that it revealed the sublime aesthetic value of Yoo Youngkuk's abstract paintings by giving it value as a color-field abstract.
