알프레드 쿠빈의 작품에 등장하는 그로테스크 이미지 연구-프로이트의 트라우마, 죽음 충동, 거세공포, 언캐니 개념을 중심으로-

Abstract

본 논문은 알프레드 쿠빈의 그로테스크 이미지를 프로이트의 정신분석학 개념 중 트라우마, 죽음 충동, 거세공포·언캐니를 통해 논의하고, 나아가 쿠빈의 미술사적 위치를 재고하는데 그 목적을 둔다. 쿠빈은 오스트리아 출신의 작가이자 삽화가로 생전에 ‘그로테스크’한 그림을 다수 그린 것으로 알려져 있다. 그의 그림에는 심연의 어두운 그림자가 드리우고, 현실에 존재하지 않는 무서운 것들이 가득하다. 그의 그림을 마주한 감상자는 두려움과 호기심을 동시에 느끼게 되고, 이내 그림 속으로 빠져들게 된다. 쿠빈이 집필한 소설 󰡔다른 한 편󰡕의 제목처럼, 그의 그로테스크한 그림은 감상자를 현실의 반대편으로 데려다 놓는다. 쿠빈의 회화는 내면의 무의식의 세계와 개인적 경험에서 비롯된 그로테스크한 면모를 보이는 이미지로 구성된다. 쿠빈이 활동했던 19세기 후반에서 20세기의 유럽 사회는 독재 정권과 전쟁의 공포가 팽배해있었다. 쿠빈은 혼란스러운 시대적 분위기 속에서 개인사적 문제들을 겪으면서 정신적·심리적으로 불안한 시간을 보냈다. 이러한 쿠빈의 불안정한 심리 상태는 작품에까지 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 1898년에서 1904년 사이에 제작된 쿠빈의 초기 회화들은 그로테스크의 정수를 보여주고 있으며, 프로이트의 트라우마, 죽음 충동, 거세공포와 언캐니의 맥락에서 설명 가능한 해석적 실마리들이 발견된다. 쿠빈의 그림에는 여성 혐오에서 비롯된 부정적인 여성상, 작품에 짙게 내재된 죽음과 관련된 비관론적인 정서 그리고 여성의 성기를 비롯한 구멍의 이미지가 다수 등장한다. 따라서 본 논문은 쿠빈의 그로테스크한 이미지의 특징을 프로이트의 정신분석학 개념인 트라우마, 죽음 충동, 거세 공포·언캐니라는 네 가지 관점에서 분석하고자 한다. 나아가 쿠빈의 그림 세계를 이루고 있는 예술적 표현 방식인 그로테스크가 ‘환상성’이라는 맥락에서 끝나지 않고 ‘왜 우리 시대의 그로테스크인가’라는 질문을 던져볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 국내에 잘 알려져 있지 않은 알프레드 쿠빈이라는 화가를 소개하고, 기존의 문학적 연구가 아닌 미술사적 연구라는 점에 있어서 의의가 있다.| This paper aims to discuss Alfred Kubin's Grotesque paintings through trauma, death impulses, castration fears, and uncanny based on Freud's psychoanalysis concepts, and further to reconsider the position of Alfred Kubin in art history. Kubin is an Austrian writer and illustrator who is known to have painted many "grotesque" paintings during his lifetime. His paintings are full of dark shadows of the abyss and scary things that do not exist in reality. Facing his paintings, the viewer feels both fear and curiosity, and soon falls into them. His grotesque paintings, like the title of the novel The Other Side, take the viewer to the other side of reality. Kubin's paintings consist of grotesque images from the inner unconscious world and personal experience. In the late 19th and 20th centuries when Kubin was active, there was widespread fear of dictatorship and war. Kubin had a time of mental and psychological uneasiness, experiencing personal historical problems in a chaotic atmosphere. Kubin's unstable state of mind influenced his work. In particular, Kubin's early paintings, produced between 1898 and 1904, show the essence of Grotesque, and explanable interpretive clues are found in Freudian psychoanalytic contexts. Kubin's paintings feature a number of negative images of women stemming from misogyny, pessimistic emotions related to death deeply embedded in the work, and images of holes, including women's genitals. Therefore, this paper attempts to analyze the characteristics of Kubin's grotesque images from four perspectives: trauma, death impulse, castration fear, and uncanny, Freud's psychoanalysis concept. Furthermore, Grotesque, the artistic way of expressing the world Kubin created, does not end in the context of "fantasy," but asks the question, "Why Grotesque of our time?" This paper introduces an artist named Alfred Kubin, who is not well-known in Korea, and is significant in that it is an art history study, not an existing study about Kubin’s novel.
